WASD to move, left and right arrows to turn, space to shoot, and E to use.

That is interesting!

I like to use the arrows to turn also
Can that be better option than the mouse when it comes to Doom? Feels right when you not looking up or down anyway.

Vanilla doom/prboom, no extra keys like jumping or mouse aiming (always run, no freelook)

No action for double-clicked mouse buttons.

Same setup for the build games with the addition of W for jump and C for crouch.

A - strafe left

D - strafe right

S - Backpedal

Mouse 1 - fire

Mouse 2 - walk forward

Space - use

It's personal preference - mouse lets you turn faster, which is of course very helpful, but I play on my laptop and don't like carrying my mouse around with me so I got used to just using the keyboard. It feels right to me now - no going back!

Even though I'm left handed, I've used a mouse and keyboard right handed all my life and I might as well be right handed when using a computer.

I use WASD for walking, E for use, mouse for turning, and left-click for shooting. For SR50 purposes, I also have right-click set to strafe on, and C and V for turning left and right.

I have an unconventional setup when playing DN3D that I have tried to adapt to Doom. Basically it’s much like WASD and mouse movement, but the keys I will not use or are not essential I unbind entirely. With Zandronum I tend to bind the weapons to letter keys for quick access, such as F for fists/chainsaw, Q for shotguns, C for chaingun, etc. and typically bind the RL to 1, plasma to 2, and BFG to 3. This is mostly for DM play that I would do that though.

I wish I could have set turning sensitive on the arrow buttons like with the mouse.
I like this idea of having both hands on the keyboard, best for laptop use indeed!

WASD for moving around, E for use.  Number keys 1-5 are weapons, Q and R are the Plasma and BFG.  Left mouse is fire, right mouse is strafe on.

Arrow keys for movement.
Since 1993.

Will NOT change even if you put a gun to my head.

Left/right strafe. Forward/back move.
Turning and mouselook controlled by the mouse.
Weapon numbers on keypad. Weapon fire, doors/switches on mouse.
Weapon next/previous on scrollwheel.

Just to add, I am right handed but play as a left hander. Mouse is always left of keyboard.

My Doom setup is generally like this:

  • WASD for movement
  • LMB to fire
  • 1-7 number keys for weapons
  • E for Use
  • Shift for walk (autorun is on and shift is for not-running)
  • Q is for turn right and alt is for toggle strafe (I can perform SR50 to the right by pressing Q-W-D-alt buttons, but SR50 to the left I can't do effectively with this setup because I would have to bind E to turn left)

GZDoom specific buttons (for mods that make use of these features):

  • Ctrl for crouch
  • Space for jump
  • RMB for alt fire

Heretic/Hexen/Strife inventory system use:

  • R for Inventory Right
  • F for Inventory Left
  • Q for Inventory use (and thus I can't do SR50 effectively in these games with my current bindings)

Interesting, I'm always curious to see the inventory bindings people use for these games.

Raven games:

Spacebar - Jump

F - Use

Z - Inventory Left

X - Inventory Right

CTRL - Use Artifact

ALT - Pause

R - Fly Down

T - Fly Up

G - Fly Center

C - Look Down

V - Look Up

B - Center View

Oopsie. I just realized I made a typo mistake and fixed my comment. I use F for Inventory Left, not L. Basically F and R for cycling through inventory

WASD, no freelook (just left and right turning with the mouse), E to use, numbers to select weapons, and autorun on. The rest is the usual. I use the default GZDoom binds for Strife popups and inventory management. I have been wanting to try out keyboard only for a while, though, and ESDF in Doom Builder is somehow fine to me even though it's weird and my brain felt like it was messing up muscle memory when I started using it.

I also have yet to play Heretic or Hexen, so no key binds for those. (I'll do it eventually - I just want to get through Episode 4 and Doom 2 first.)

I've been using WASD for movement, mouse for turning/looking and E for 'Use' ever since that was the default contol scheme for Half-Life.  It's a common standard control layout for so many other PC games that I've played by now (although sometimes 'F' is 'Use' instead) that it's become ingrained in me & I can't go back, so now it's what I set classic Doom to use as well.

I have never understood why the default went from arrow keys to WASD...
Don't know who's idea it was or why they somehow thought it was an improvement...

From Wolfenstein 3D all the way through to Doom Eternal... arrow keys FTW!!!

I ESDF, always. Interact key is G of course, right on the home row. I keep 1-5 as they are, "Q" is typically my plasma-gun key (has good synergy with Quad damage in later games, so that works out), and "W" for my BFG. With games that have more than six weapons I've gotta get creative and try to use Q, W, R, T as "upgraded" variants of the weapon keys above them, if they serve a similar purpose. In that case, Q might be an upgraded pistol (railgun/sniper), W an upgraded shotgun (other power or ballistic, Doom 4 works well for this particular case), 3 as a machine gun, 4 as an upgraded machine gun (chaingun), and R as an upgraded chaingun (plasma gun) in Quake 2's particular case, 5 as a rocket launcher and T as a BFG or something. It takes a LOT of figuring out sometimes. Sometimes I throw X into that equation since E isn't available. I REALLY wish all games were just like Half-Life and Half-Life 2.

In mods and games where it's relevant, I normally have the space key (actually backspace, on my maltron-layout keyboard) set to reload, freeing up "R" for that earlier purpose. Middle-click to jump, Right click as secondary fire as per usual, and additionally, if this is a separate control in that particular game, hold Z to either "weapon Zoom" (ADS) or as a held freelook, seeing as games where it's dizzying to permanently freelook around in like Duke3D or Dark Forces will rarely have a weapon zoom function.

I think that covers about everything. Don't get me started on my inventory keys in games like Duke3D, the Heretic series, Quake 2, Unreal or Warframe though, where they allow you to choose to either open up a menu, or set mnemonic hotkeys to use items directly. To make a long story short, I normally use the right side of my keyboard for that. You rarely need to use items -that- quickly.

I've also got a Logitech G600 gaming mouse. Sometimes if I run out of keys  to use on the left side of my keyboard, or I really -do- need to use items that quickly, I'll just slap them on there. Maybe writing this was all a bit pointless, I guess it's more for me than any readers here. Even I haven't completely figured out how my keybindings work yet.

Have always done old fps games with arrow keys.
I think it was when Counter Strike came it changed clearly to WASD..

Now I use WASD and the arrow keys instead of the mouse and it feels very logical.

one more for

Q - RL
E - Plasma
F - BFG

That's the main alteration for me. I tend to think it's good to play doom with default keybinds as much as possible but I do not want to reach for higher number keys in a pinch.

Dark Castle on Macintosh is credited as being the first game to bind WASD for movement by default all the way back in 1986, but it was almost certainly Valve that made it so popular, as they used WASD for all* their games starting with Half-Life. Interestingly Gabe Newell has said he prefers ESDF, while Dario Casali, a level designer for Half-Life uses ASXC. I assume that S and X are forward and backward, and A and C are for strafing, which is pretty interesting indeed, and I can imagine it feeling natural after getting used to it.

I didn't take to WASD at first, and for the longest time I had to rebind movement to WQSE, W and S being forward and backward, Q and E for strafing, but I guess I slowly adapted to WASD due to it being the default in so many games.

UPDATE: I'm kind of shocked at how natural ASXC feels, with Z and D used for turning/SL50/SR50. I don't know about long term but I can see ASXC being a thing.

Didn't know that... cool :)
