DSC Posted December 4, 2023 Today marks the 30th anniversary of the death of experimental and avant-garde musician Frank Vincent Zappa. He died in the 4th of December 1993, of prostate cancer. Even though he may be long gone, he's for sure not long forgotten, having amassed throughout the years a massive cult following. I don't know why, but I have a feeling that one of those fans currently walks among us in the Doom community... Who could it be? 10 Quote Share this post Link to post
P_A_Z Posted December 4, 2023 RIP Frank. He was a genius, an excellent composer, and a funny man. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Somniac Posted December 4, 2023 We weren't ready for Jazz From Hell and probably won't be for another hundred years. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Reveal hidden contents Expand The U.S. Government, especially Congress and the Senate, have an obsession with moral panics. Some things never change. First it was movies, then comic books, then heavy metal music, then video games. Whenever Congress and the Senate want to distract from their own behavior and crimes, they hold Congressional hearings on non-sense topics like PMRC. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Uncle 80 Posted December 4, 2023 I've been a fan for about that long. I started listening to Zappa a little while before he died IIRC. I'd describe myself as a moderate fan, as I own only about 20 of his albums on CD.... 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Expand I like Jazz From Hell myself but it's still not exactly his crowning achievement, it felt like him trying to get to terms with what the Synclavier could do. Personally I find Civilization Phaze III to be his most special album. It's a full blown experimental orchestral album all mostly done on the computer. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Master O Posted December 6, 2023 A Doom 2 wad with Jazz from Hell as an inspiration would be potentially hilarious. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Dark Pulse Posted December 6, 2023 Fittingly enough, I posted "Sheik Yerbouti Tango" in a Discord server yesterday. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
BluePineapple72 Posted December 9, 2023 I started getting into Zappa right before lockdowns started to land in 2020. Funnily enough I checked him out cause I always say that mug of his poking around the forums on one user's profile pictures... Hard to say really how much of an impact his music has had on me. Hard to describe it as anything other than life-changing, really. Special shout out to Sleep Dirt. Odd pick for a favorite considering the story of its release, but by in large I'd say musically those first three songs hit me in a special place somewhere in the soft of my kidneys every time I listen to them. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
