opinions on pineapple on pizza?

Recommended Posts

The age old "should pineapple be on pizza" question has become a meme and cliche.

Well the best answer is: Depends on the authenticity and style of the Pizza.

Where Pineapples are inappropriate:
Classic Italian, wood oven baked pizza with a focus on the dough's texture and gourmet but limited toppings. E.g. buffalo cheese, moist margherita sauce, and a thin crust, sprinkled with oregano and some basil. When done right, you will clearly taste the sauce, cheese and herbs within the soft crusty warm bread. Adding Pineapple would just interrupt the perfect harmony of flavors.

Where Pineapples are appropriate:
General fast food style. Often the sauce isn't noticeable and the cheese serves more of a cool stringy effect than flavor. The toppings are plentiful and often very meaty and cheesy that makes the pizza quite salty. This is when Pineapple is a good addition to the pizza, as the moist sweet flavor hit helps balance the otherwise dominating salty, thick flavors and texture.

Why do people give a shit, either way? If it's your own pizza, just ask the place to exclude it. If it's a communal thing like an office party, just pick it off your slice. It's not like an open-heart surgery thing.

As someone who also has an Italian surname, pineapple on pizza is great, though it depends on the other toppings. Nothing at all wrong with fruit pizzas: pear gorgonzola is another great one.

Pineapple on pizza may be subjectively okay taste-wise, but one needs to remember that many people need to hate something (since accepting that all tastes are valid is boring), so pineapple was popularly chosen as the ingredient to direct hate towards.

depends on where the pizza came from. the pizza+pineapple combo should be relatively safe if you eat at or order from a [non-italian] restaurant, i guess.

It's wonderful on thin, cracker-like crusted pizza with some ham bacon.

Fixed that for you :P

I have had several people in my life protest when I wanted to order a pineapple and bacon pizza. So of course we compromise by getting two pizzas, only for people to later exclaim "Wow this is actually good!"

The thing is, I like almost any pizza. I'll eat fried eggplant pizza. Potato pizza. Steak taco pizza.

As someone who ate pineapple pizza, it's pretty good. It's like Comic Sans, everyone seems to hate it, but some don't get what's the big deal about it, me included.

I have never taste a simple hawaiian pizza with pineapple, ham, black olives and oregano. I think the savour will be a little bit surprising.

Categorically false.

I like pineapple on pizza. The citrus-like flavor goes well with the tomato and cheese, much like lime goes with mexican and lemon goes with seafood.

It's not my favourite (after all, that's a topping that could instead be more meat), but I don't mind it. If you give me a Hawaiian, I'll eat it.

As someone who's possible Italian surname has been lost to marriage culture, I'm also in the boat that anything can belong on pizza. Pizza in its modern form is so far removed from how it originated that any purists out there are out to lunch on complaining what others do to their smushed bread with cheese and maybe sauce. Personally, I don't like it on mine, but as kinsie stated they can be easily picked off. If anything, opening our pizzas to be more accessible to different tastes further solidifies our tasty world conquest, overcooked-style 🤓
