Deadfish Posted December 9, 2023 Does anyone know how to play .mid files with a soundfont and preferably fluidsynth outside of Doom: With a tool? And I know that it is possible with VLC, but you have to click in so many submenus, to change the soundfont. If anyone knows a simpler approach I would appreciate that. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Deadfish Posted December 9, 2023 Maybe using the command-line interface with fluidsynth is also okay. If someone could explain me how to use the integrated command-line player in fluidsdynth would be really nice. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Deadfish Posted December 9, 2023 Other question: Is there a hardware approach? Could you theoretically play midi data from your PC to a audio interface to say a electric stage piano and then to the speakers (which are also connected to the audio interface)? I am confused about this, can someone please explain? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Deadfish Posted December 9, 2023 Just found the easiest method after two hours search: vlc --soundfont "X:\Path\to\File.sf2" "X:\Path\to\File.mid" This will open the vlc player GUI, and you don't have to click around in the convoluted menu to switch sounfonts. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

So yes, that's theoretically possible if your piano is a MIDI piano. And you have a MIDI port on your computer, and MIDI cables to connect them. And professional MIDI software to handle the connection. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
DoomPlayer00 Posted December 9, 2023 Audacious can play midi files fairly effortlessly. Provide the soundfont and you're good to go. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
ludicrous_peridot Posted December 9, 2023 (edited) Please consider FalcoSoft MIDIPlayer. It is quite awesome, has support for MUS format and not only MIDI and you can throw soundfont-s at it as long as it is configured to use BassMIDI, which is just couple of clicks. Frankly speaking, this is my go-to MIDI solution in Windows. EDIT: Apologies, it's BassMIDI, not fluidsynth, but I would still recommend it.
