I noticed this in map 22, is this intentional?

(The blue ceiling above the light in the secret next to the start).

Is map 36 supposed to hit my FPS? It's a massive map with a lot of monsters, so I guess it's pretty demanding on DSDA DOOM.

Even my i7 14700 seems to bounce a fair bit.

 

Loving the map BTW!

Causing FPS issues is not a specific intent, of course, but an inevitable consequence of the design. Not sure what engine and settings you're running, but try DSDA-Doom in OpenGL mode if you haven't.

It's definitely the ambition and scope of the map - absolutely mind blowing, by the way. I've tried it on two different machines on DSDA OpenGL and even on a brand new high end machine, it drops frames. It's still more than playable / enjoyable on both machines though.

It's a bit of a curse that I have such a monstrous machine myself, since I can't really tell when I'm pushing too hard, but I'm glad to hear it's still working OK. This is at 4k:

Good catch !. If by chance Bauul hasn't fixed this yet, it is the ceiling of sector 897. Ceiling probably should be OBKMDT75.

Finally getting around to finishing off Eviternity2, having trouble figuring out what one of the secrets does in Map26.

 

Spoiler

When accessing the "Passage" path, going backwards from the start reveals a secret platform with a blue gem in the wall. Shooting this seems to do nothing?

It's one of 6 switches that open up the 7th secret. To be fair, this is the only one you shoot.

Softlock opportunity in RC5 Map26 on the Conceal path, where if you press space and use the skull switches on the walls before they drop as you cross them the first time, they won't open if you re-enter the path a second time.

Softlock in map 04 where if monsters get stuck between sectors 391 and 2695, 2695 will not raise reliably to allow the player to continue if they fall. I managed to capture this in a demo, ev2_04_softlock.zip where the specter managed to enter the cave, get hit by the shotgunner, and get stuck at about the 20-second point.

Great write-up, thank you. I got a much better feel of the thought process. Maybe it's just my nerdy side but I wish there was more writing about various aspects of Doom, no matter what the specific topic is.

Completely get it, if there's one wad where the phrase "it's done when it's done" is appropriate, it's Evi2. To my shame I have not started playing it yet (partially due to my machine bottlenecking smooth gameplay in complex maps), but I've been watching Mancubian Candidate's ongoing playthrough and it blows my mind. Take your time 😄

That was very interesting to read! Also made me realise the map is more open ended than I thought, I largely went the same route both times I played it.

 

Unexpectedly it made me interested to try Doom mapping. Too many hobbies!

I just went through the ENTIRE wad (Up to map 36) without realizing the perforator was a weapon. THE ENTIRE WAD. HOW?!
I turned off autoswitch so I never switched to it.

Until I got to the end of map 36 and was like "How do I do this with just a chaingun?" so I idkfa'd to see if it was attached to the necromancers and I missed the 7 key and hit 8.

I think that was kind of on me...

Eh... what did you think it was when you first saw the weapon sprite in map 31 (or in whatever map you saw it first)?

I thought it was possibly a weapon but I never pressed 8.

It would have been good if the arms section of the hud had a 8th option.

Truth be told, I'm not likely to revisit the Eviternity name to be honest. I don't want to pigeonhole myself into a single series for the rest of my life, there's more ideas and concepts I'd want to explore... Also many, many other hobbies I've been neglecting that I'd want to go and do instead of draw lines all day! :P

 Now my life is complete. Map 30 music is up,

 

and I just flipping beat Catalyst for the first time without cheating. Savescummed my way to a 3:38 but I did it.

 

Turning GZDoom video settings from Hardware renderer to Doom Software renderer sorted it and gave me the framerate I needed on my high-end (in 2011) laptop, at the cost of resolution. Oh well.

Then back to high res hardware the rest of the time.
