An idea for a new Community Project?! Based on monster health.

It was a rainy day the other day, so it got me thinking, what if we built maps based on the amount of health your enemies were going to have?

In that case, instead of limiting the player to have 1% health to work with throughout an entire map, what if we limited the health the monsters had to work with to beat you?

For example, for a specific slot, the mapper would have to place monsters that - combined - accounted for a total of 10000 health. In a way that, for another slot, the limit would change based on the higher the slot, the more health the monsters had in total. I'd name the project 'How much health?' (kind of the sequel to 'What is health?')

What you guys think?

So, like that map from Limit Buffet? Interesting idea....

I didn't know about that one. I've been absent from the community for a while. I posted the idea I had here to check whether people would find it interesting as well! I really think it would be cool.

However, it's a pretty neat idea!

I was thinking about barrels... They aren't monsters but they use a health meter (20 hit points like zombiemen), are they part of the total health count or it be used freely?

Yea, sure! I like barrels but I find difficult to use them in a fun/useful way.

I really think the monster health restriction leads to a variety of mapping possibilities. You could have a level full of hitscanners and the following map you'd be thrown to a cyberden.

Sounds like a fun idea in theory, but the concern I have is how high the barrier of entry might be for a project that's so reliant on knowing the monster stats. Then again, one could look up the info on the Doom wiki.

I think that's easy as just placing this video on the (hypothetical) OP

We could display a list in the OP with the corresponding health for each of the monsters. I could double-check the health count for each map, if anything.

If you're using a 32-bit version of Doom Builder, there's a plugin that keeps track of various map statistics, with total monster health being among those. This would help to keep oneself within the limit, which I do think has potential.

That being said, it feels as if there is an overwhelming number of ongoing community projects at the moment. Take a moment to consider if your idea is good enough to gather enough interest, as well as if you are properly committed and capable of running a larger project like this. It's not easy. Additionally, if you decide to push forward with this, have at least a few maps done before you think about posting a project thread.

There's also this plugin, but you have to compile it yourself.
