jmpt16 Posted December 11, 2023 Title says it all. Could you use any Doom source port to make a game with intent to sell? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
dasho Posted December 11, 2023 (edited) Assuming it is a port based off of the GPL licensed release of the source I can't imagine why you couldn't. EDIT: Or a from-scratch effort like Helion Edited December 11, 2023 by dasho 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Here's a suggestion... if you are not even willing to put in the bare minimum of effort in reading a thread, maybe don't bother posting in it. Well, here I go poking the bear... How is someone with your attitude a Super Moderator on this site? EDIT: Wow, look at how fast that whole conversation just disappeared. But let's move on back to the topic, it's too early in the morning for this nonsense. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
realjohnmadden Posted December 11, 2023 As long as you're not using any assets you don't own (i.e Doom, Heretic, etc assets) and you're using a port that's under the GPL (GZDoom, Woof?), you can release it just fine. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
yum13241 Posted December 11, 2023 If you wanted to, you could even use the original Linux Doom source code. Anything GPL licensed is fine. MIT and BSD licenses will work, but the GNU GPL is better, because yes. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

The posts were hidden shortly before you sent your message, since nothing that was said in the end warranted a stern reprimand by me. Anyway, to remain on topic, I believe the reason games favor GZDoom over other ports is because it just has a more robust history of being used for this purpose and is thus more readily packageable. I do vaguely recall Revae mentioning this aspect when people were asking why he chose that port over others. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Dynamo Posted December 11, 2023 Right, I meant the Steam version, should've clarified :P 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
