James McCaffrey Dead at 65

Recommended Posts

I finished Alan Wake 2 a few weeks ago, I love him as Trench in Control and Alex Casey in 2. Naturally, love him in Max Payne; I was wondering how he'd do the Max Payne remakes (if he was going to).

Wonder no more, I guess. Rest in peace.

Well, this sucks. His voice and performance gave each of those games a distinct feel. 65 isn't exactly young, but it sure ain't old either.

R.I.P. Max Payne.

Seems like everyone I know who had a battle with cancer tend to lose all the time shortly after... I'm curious on what this means for the Max Payne remakes, if they're planning on reprising roles.

And we keep driving into the night, it's a late goodbye, such a late goodbye...

Disrespectful little runt as usual.

This news is awful. I was just looking Googling him yesterday because of Alan Wake. His voice was fucking powerful, his performance as Max Payne was one of the greatest displays of voice acting I had ever heard. I was also a fan of Rescue Me, I wish he was more prominent in the series. You could tell that he was a cool person in real life just because of his overall demeanor, even though he played angry and spiteful characters. This is a real punch in the gut, I felt this one.

Sad news. His performance in Max Payne was indeed outstanding.

He delivered his gloomy lines with great talent, the perfect fit for a neo-noir game.

I will remember him.

RIP to a legend with a great talent and range on his voices.

Hopefully the family stay strong this December.

Rest in Peace.
James' voice in Max Payne 1 and 2 is the best detail I will always remember these games for.

Frankly speaking, his voice in the 20th game's anniversary video made me upset. I barely recognised it =(

"Everything was subjective.

There were only personal apocalypses.

Nothing is a cliché when it's happening to you."

That line has always stayed with me and the deadpan way in which it was delivered by McCaffrey.

R.I.P.

James McCaffrey had an amazing voice, his scenery chewing performance as Max Payne will forever live on as truly one of the greatest and most memorable voice overs I (and many others) will ever get the pleasure of experiencing.

He will not be forgotten, rest in power king.

RIP but hopefully his passing was a relief, considering how painful of a sickness cancer is.

TBH I only recognise his work from Max Payne but his voice acting was really good in the 1st game.

I respectfully disagree. ^^ I think James McCaffrey was good in each of the three Max Payne games.

It's actually the Game Script which I felt got weaker and weaker with each sequel.

This culminated in Max Payne 3: they were so many lines which felt out of place. I remember thinking "Max Payne would never have said something like that".

Or maybe the main character really got bitter and bitter and the sequels reflect that? Turning him into the real nihilistic he is in Max Payne 3. But you know what? I humbly believe the voice actor really succeeded in conveying that growing sense of hopelessness. Rest in Peace legendary voice actor James McCaffrey.

That has always been my interpretation.

Personally, I do not think fictional characters should remain the exact same no matter how old they get and how much shit they go through. I mean, in the first game alone, the Max Payne that ends up armed with a sniper rifle at the top of a skyscraper is not the same Max Payne that has just come home only to find out that his wife and child have been murdered by a group of drug-addled assassins.

"It was like Baghdad with G-Strings" left scars on my psyche that would never heal. I really did not like Rockstar's writing for the third game.

But enough about that, RIP to a huge legend. Without him, Max Payne would not have been the hit it was or carry the same impact it had.
