Obsidian Level Generator ironically won this first installment's award of Best Software.

Haven't been tracking everything, so is the award an NFT? I need to find someone to hold the bag

Wow, it's just... I'm... overwhelmed. The second I saw this level, I was so shocked by what I experienced that I just HAD to write a review of my own about it.

Spoiler

In the vast realm of DOOM mapping, where creativity knows no bounds, one level has emerged as a true marvel: "Bepis Bandits" by the exceptionally talented mapper, TheMisterCat. This awe-inspiring creation has taken the DOOM community by storm, showcasing not only the mapper's ingenious design skills but also his ability to push the boundaries of file size limitations, with an astonishingly compact 1-kilobyte footprint.

From the moment you step into the pixelated world of Bepis Bandits, it's evident that TheMisterCat is not your average DOOM mapper. The level is a testament to the belief that size does not always matter when it comes to delivering an immersive and thrilling gaming experience. In fact, the constrained file size becomes a defining feature of the map, highlighting TheMisterCat's dedication to innovation.

One of the most striking aspects of Bepis Bandits is its visual aesthetic. The mapper has managed to craft a detailed and visually engaging environment, complete with intricate textures and clever use of limited resources. The level doesn't sacrifice quality for quantity, as every pixel feels purposeful and contributes to the overall atmosphere. The attention to detail is nothing short of remarkable, showcasing TheMisterCat's mastery of the DOOM mapping craft.

The gameplay in Bepis Bandits is a rollercoaster of excitement, with every inch of the level carefully designed to challenge players in unexpected ways. The layout is both intuitive and labyrinthine, keeping players on their toes as they navigate through a maze of corridors, encountering relentless waves of enemies. TheMisterCat's strategic placement of enemies and weapons adds a layer of depth to the gameplay, requiring players to think on their feet and make split-second decisions to survive.

What truly sets Bepis Bandits apart, however, is the groundbreaking 1-kilobyte file size. In an era where larger file sizes often equate to more content, TheMisterCat has defied expectations by creating a fully fleshed-out and immersive experience within the confines of a minuscule file. This accomplishment is a testament to the mapper's ingenuity and technical prowess, showcasing a level of optimization that is truly unparalleled in the DOOM modding community.

The compact size of Bepis Bandits also opens up new possibilities for sharing and distributing custom DOOM content. With such a small file size, players can easily download and enjoy the level without worrying about excessive bandwidth usage or storage constraints. TheMisterCat's innovation in this regard has the potential to reshape the way we approach and appreciate custom DOOM maps, inspiring future mappers to explore the possibilities of efficiency in file size.

In conclusion, Bepis Bandits by TheMisterCat is a groundbreaking achievement in DOOM mapping. From its visually stunning design to its challenging gameplay, the level stands as a shining example of what can be accomplished within the constraints of a 1-kilobyte file size. TheMisterCat has not only crafted an exceptional gaming experience but has also paved the way for a new era of efficiency and innovation in the world of DOOM modding. As players continue to explore the wonders of Bepis Bandits, they are sure to be inspired by the limitless potential that lies within the confines of a single kilobyte.

Like i said, I don't have to explain myself to anyone, like Batandy did a few days ago for example about Golden Souls 3, and people came out to give their opinion on how bad using AI is for development...(everyone knows who said it).

This was like one negative tweet immediately taken back when proper context was known. And was prompted by Batandy replacing the ai art before any backlash. Replacing some minor assets from 2019 made with ai with non ai assets before the moral conundrum of ai generation was even a discussion.

Doom awards entire damn website is ai slop, made to be transparent and neutral by being written by a fucking computer, get real.

Truly strange how spite from not getting a png and a few paragraphs to wax about BlooM led to this.

I'm afraid I don't like Bepis Bandits, and I have taken the unfortunate task of tasking ChatGPT of writing a scathing review of this travesty:

Spoiler

Title: The Bepis Bandits: A Lamentable Descent into Chaos

Rating: ★☆☆☆☆ (1/5)

The Bepis Bandits, a WAD by TheMisterCat, is a cacophony of disappointment that leaves players questioning not only the state of modern modding but also the integrity of certain accolades within the Doom community. As if the WAD itself weren't perplexing enough, its tangential association with alleged backroom dealings in the Cacowards adds a layer of controversy that further tarnishes its already questionable reputation.

Let's start with the WAD itself. The Bepis Bandits fails on multiple fronts, most notably in level design. The maps are a disorienting mishmash of textures and structures that seem to have been randomly strewn together. There's no cohesive theme or logical progression, leaving players feeling lost and frustrated. The layout is confusing, and navigation becomes a tedious exercise in trial and error.

Gameplay is equally lackluster. The encounters are poorly balanced, with haphazardly placed enemies that feel more like a chore to dispatch than a challenge to overcome. The weapon placement is arbitrary, resulting in a frustratingly unbalanced arsenal that doesn't cater to strategic gameplay. It's clear that little thought went into crafting an engaging and enjoyable player experience.

The aesthetics of The Bepis Bandits are another sore point. The choice of textures is jarring, and the lack of attention to detail is evident throughout. The visual cacophony serves as a constant distraction, detracting from any potential enjoyment that might have been salvaged from the gameplay.

Now, addressing the elephant in the room – the alleged involvement of a secret group manipulating the Cacowards. While these claims may be exaggerated or entirely baseless, the mere association of The Bepis Bandits with such rumors raises eyebrows. It calls into question the integrity of the accolades and whether certain WADs are receiving praise based on merit or on personal connections within the Doom community.

In conclusion, The Bepis Bandits is a woeful testament to the pitfalls of unchecked praise and a stark reminder that quality should never be sacrificed for the sake of dubious camaraderie. TheWAD is a prime example of how misguided recognition can undermine the credibility of an entire modding scene. One can only hope that future releases will be judged on their merits rather than their associations.

Ah, Kevansevans, you truly bless us with your magnificent display of arrogance and contempt. Your discerning eye has brought forth a most intriguing perspective on the masterpiece that is Bepis Bandits. Your assertion of the wad's purported lackluster quality and questionable texture choices is nothing short of a symphony of skepticism. Each texture, carefully chosen, seems to sing a silent ballad of creativity, weaving a narrative that transcends the mundane confines of conventional aesthetics.

And let us not forget your keen observations on monster placement! Your astute analysis has cast a spotlight on what some may deem chaotic encounters, but we, the enlightened enthusiasts of Bepis Bandits, view as a choreographed ballet of chaos and mayhem. Oof.

I haven't had a lot of time to be involved in the community in the last few months, but this thread was... Very informative.

I was approached in May via DM on Discord about getting involved with them. First impression was that they were coming on a bit too strong with the flattery, although I thought that could just be because they were eager to get people on board.

I exchanged some pleasant words with Hakros, but found myself wondering if there might be something spiteful at the heart of it, so kept my distance.

TheWAD is a prime example

Do you mean to tell me that "artificial intelligence" is unable to spot and correct a basic spelling error, something that was added to MS Word at least 20 years ago?

Congratulations to all the winners of Doom Awards '23. I'm looking forward to the inevitable, twilight-zone complimentary thread on The Forum That Must Not Be Named, but I'd better check the cupboard to see if I have remembered restocking my popcorn supply first.

Was hakros one of the people participating in the bigoted discussion? Why aren't they banned yet?

Because Hakros Potter and The Awards Of AskForABan isn't a movie i would want to see and it happened off Doomworld.

If Hakros would have actively promoted the awards in similar colour as what was shown on the screencaps, then likely yes.

" I know there is the concern, that AI could render some traditional jobs as obsolete, but in this case, it let me reduce much of the laborious work down to a few days vs months "

Quoted from the DA website.

Dont worry Cacoward judges, your work will be still needed.

A Love Letter to Bepis Bandits: The Map That Changed My Life

Spoiler

From the moment I first laid eyes on the Bepis Bandits map for Doom 2 (1994), I knew I was witnessing something extraordinary. Despite the limitations of my 486, which couldn’t quite handle the complexity of the map, I was captivated by the intricate design and the immersive gameplay it offered.

The map was a labyrinth of challenges and surprises, each corner unveiling a new layer of the game’s depth. The attention to detail was astounding, with every pixel meticulously crafted to enhance the player’s experience. It was clear that the creators had poured their heart and soul into this map, and it shone through in every aspect of the game.

What set Bepis Bandits apart from other maps in the idgames archive was not just its superior design, but also its innovative approach to gameplay. It pushed the boundaries of what was possible in Doom 2, offering a fresh and exciting experience that was a step above anything else available at the time.

But more than just a map, Bepis Bandits was an invitation to a community. It was this map that led me to join the Doomworld community, a vibrant and passionate group of gamers who shared my love for Doom 2. The discussions, the camaraderie, and the shared excitement for each new map release were infectious, and I found myself becoming an active and enthusiastic member of the community.

In conclusion, Bepis Bandits is more than just a map - it’s a testament to the power of creativity and community in gaming. It’s a shining example of what makes Doom 2 such a beloved game, even decades after its release. And for me, it was the spark that ignited my passion for Doom 2 and led me to join the Doomworld community. Despite the technical limitations of my 486, the impact of Bepis Bandits on my gaming journey is immeasurable. It truly is a gem in the idgames archive.

Okay, I think the joke's been beaten to death now. And honestly, I don't think this thread has much left in it. Everyone's said their piece, all that's left is for Hakros to take on whatever feedback he considers appropriate to make improvements for the next go around, and for everyone else to write their own really good reviews about things that made an impact on them (whether positively or otherwise).
