id software heading to a galaxy far, far away for next game?

Recommended Posts

My favourite Star Wars games are not exactly classics (in fact, they have aged quite poorly and one of them was not very well received even back then), but I still have a lot of affection for Force Commander (including its kickass remixed soundtrack) and the N64 version of Shadows of the Empire (the one with the minimally-animated slideshow cutscenes that have aged so much better than the PC port's CG cutscenes).

You know what I think they should do?

- Lucasarts reverse engineered the DOOM engine to make Dark Forces.

- Id software reverse engineers the Dark Forces engine (Jedi) to make a DOOM game.

Problem solved. Everybody wins!

It's no 'Doom'... it's on Playstation!

Though it'd be more likely that its a side-project or perhaps their Frankfurt studio may be focusing on

Id Frankfurt is exclusively engine tech, IIRC, and Id Dallas has been a two-game studio since around the Rage days.

There have been several good classic Star Wars games. Personally I enjoyed the X-Wing/TIE Fighter series (Lucas Arts/Totally Games), the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series (Lucas Arts/Raven Software), and the KOTOR series (Bioware/Obsidian).

I haven't played Dark Forces, might look at that one first

Can't they just have some fucking B-tier studio hack something together on a budget? It's just fucking Star Wars.

But seriously it could go either way, something you go back to over and over for the rest of your life or a one-and-done, I'm realistically expecting the latter.

Also worth noting that:

a.) The source in the article is literally just some random talking head on Youtube that the article writer isn't even entirely convinced by.

b.) Multiple developers owned by Microsoft have been similarly flimsily-attached to a Mandalorian project over the last few years.

In short, it's probably totally in the works and will come out around the same time as MachineGames' Quake reboot with a female protagonist that the internet tells me they've been working on for probably six years at this point.

What, are we going to play Shub-Niggurath?

I mean, according to Quake 1's manual, she is supposed to be the titular character.

RAGE 2 being a critical and financial disappointment didn't hurt the DOOM community.

Trust me, bro. Just give it another year. All the Nintendo uncles point to a Summer 2024 reveal.

Don't try to talk sense to that guy. He and logic are not on speaking terms.

Some interesting observations I've made since this rumor came about.

The bulk of DOOM / id software fandom feedback seems, well, less than enthused (for lack of a better term).

Surprisingly however, all the Star Wars gaming social media groups that this rumor appeared in are estactic and overjoyed that Id software (and more specifically the creators of the latest DOOM entries) are possibly doing a Mando game. From various comments, they hold id software in very high standards and really want this to be a thing.

The people who were involved in creating something you hold dear no longer work here; and if they are involved, you should probably be even more worried. Funny, I've heard that somewhere before...

Tbf id is still doing well even after the Carmack era (massive rare chances of this happening to old game devs)

But yeah, imo SW is a shadow of its former self, and unless someone competent takes hold, it's not coming back to what it was

Anyhow, not interested in the id game a lot, unless they can make it interesting enough.

The issue isn't id IMO, the issue is that SW has been milked to death beyond it being something everyone loved.

The Star Wars Holiday Special - arguably the worst piece of Star Wars media ever produced - came out in 1978. All the spin-off shows and movies that nobody wants to remember (Ewoks, Droids, Caravan of Courage, etc.) came out in the 1980s. Yoda Stories, Masters of Teräs Käsi, Rebel Assault, Star Wars Chess and so many more mediocre-at-best tie-in video games came out throughout the 90s and early 2000s; even classics like the KOTOR games were notoriously rough around the edges. And of all the many, many tie-in novels and comics that made the Expanded Universe, how many were actually worth reading? As a video game, Shadows of the Empire is pretty cool, albeit janky (like most early 3D games were), but the novel is terrible; if you think Rey is a Mary Sue, wait until you see the novel's portrayal of Dash Rendar...

I am no fan of Disney myself, but I am getting sick and tired of people pretending that things were that much better under LucasFilms.

As baseless as this may be, it could be cool for Star Wars fans and in giving them a more fun and frantic shooter. For me, it’s an intellectual property I no longer “love”; I’ve just had so much of it shoved down my throat the last several years that hasn’t agreed with me that I’m indifferent towards it now.

I feel like this kind of shooter would be better handled by, and more appropriate for, MachineGames, but from what I’ve heard they may be busy with a different Lucasarts IP at this time.

I've heard that allegedly, Doom 1 was considered to be an 'Aliens' licensed game, some time very early in development. I think that would still be a better fit for id, even all these years later in 2023.

Ngl, even though I love George Lucas-era Star Wars, those days are over, and I haven't been excited for any Nu-Star Wars media since The Force Awakens in 2015. Anything Disney touches will suffer, including an id game.

If George was still in charge, I might sing a different tune.

What you're forgetting is that when George Lucas-era LucasFilms shits some Star Wars crap out, like the Holiday specials or the CGI edits of the Original Trilogy, it's so bad it's good. I can actually laugh my ass off making fun of the stupid shit George adds, like the CGI aliens "singing" in RotJ.

When Disney shits some Star Wars crap out, it's actually just so bad that it's not even funny.

Which says a lot about the respective fandoms, I think. Both are quite old and venerable with extensive history, but Doom as an IP has been treated much better over the years than Star Wars and the fandom quietly chugged away for years mostly out of sight, whereas Star Wars fandom is far broader but shallow, without the same kind of creative upswell that has kept Doom alive for three decades, with fandom activity instead revolving around arguing over minutiae, getting performatively hyped over new material for a $65 billion dollar multimedia franchise of tremendously varying quality owned by the largest corporate entertainment entity in the world, and occasionally trying to start cults based on the vague mishmash of 1960s spiritualist ideas that make up Star Wars' cosmology.

In short: no wonder Star Wars fans are so jazzed about this. They don't really have much else to get genuinely excited for.

LucasFilms had its issues but not even close to the shitshow it's now.

Also, George at least had a passion for what he was doing albeit with frequent hit-or-miss results.
