Ultimate Doom Builder crashing whenever trying to use the 3D view after an update

Amaruψ

Question

So, I've been an avid user of Ultimate Doom Builder, and the program has worked flawlessly on my previous operating system (Windows 7). This morning however, I've updated to Windows 10 due to the Steam's looming threat of ceasing to work anymore. I booted up UDB after setting up my system once again, and it ran the updater. Now, whenever I try to access the 3D View, the program crashes.

Not sure what exactly the cause of problem is, since it used to work without any issues prior. Heck, I even used it the night before without any problems. Any sort of help will be appreciated. Just for the system specs, it's a i5-3340M processor paired with 8 gigs of DDR3 memory, and has an Intel HD Graphics 4000 chipset.

Give GZDoom Builder Bugfix a try if you can't get UDB to play nicely.

For any other users stumbling across this thread: do not do this. First, check to make sure there wasn't something else that changed which actually caused the problem (every "UDB updated and something broke" post I've ever stumbled across was actually caused by something that wasn't UDB), and if you're for sure that it's a UDB thing, report it as a bug so it gets fixed. Don't downgrade to an ancient version and then leave both yourself other users that may have the same issue stranded without a real solution.

For completeness' sake, "reinstall graphics driver" is a bit simplified. Use DDU to clean out the old drivers first. Intel has some instructions here:

It is best to download the appropriate correct drivers from Nvidia/AMD/Intel first, and disconnect from the network while uninstalling and reinstalling. Otherwise, Windows Update will "helpfully" grab new drivers and now you need to reinstall again because they will definitely be out of date.

Ultimate Doom Builder had a massive dummy-spit with me about 12 months ago. I'm not sure exactly why but it went from working perfectly to crashing when opening a WAD... even an IWAD. Dropped back to the last version of GZDoom Builder Bugfix and haven't had any more issues. I was worried I'd somehow corrupted my WAD file but when it wouldn't even open official IWAD's I realised it was a program issue, not a WAD issue.

Give GZDoom Builder Bugfix a try if you can't get UDB to play nicely.

Turns out, it wasn't UDB's fault at all whatsoever. Updating the OS actually botched the graphics drivers completely. It couldn't detect OpenGL or Vulkan drivers at all. Did a reinstall of the video drivers and it sprang back up again quite nicely.

I'd completely agree to this. Just because that it ran it update before the issue started to happen I simply interpreted it as something to do with the program. If I didn't start up GZDoom and had it fail to load into Vulkan, I wouldn't have realized that the graphic drivers were botched. So yeah, please narrow down the issues with the computer first before considering it to be a UDB problem.
