97th Century Fox Posted January 3 Random idea I got. I'll start with my own confession: I never played TNT or Plutonia without using mods. After playing through The Ultimate Doom and Doom2 for the first time, on ZDoom with vanilla gameplay, I discovered Brutal Doom and decided to play TNT and Plutonia with it. For a while, I found it off when I heard people calling Plutonia hard because with BD it was a breeze lol. For a few years every wad I played was paired with some kind of gameplay mod, so there's a bunch of wads I never played through with their vanilla gameplay. This changed since I switched to DSDA Doom, and now I'm playing through Alien Vandetta and BTSX E1 without mods, and I plan to finally go through TNT and Plutonia properly soon as well. If a thrad like this exists already then I aplogize; either way I hope this will be fun! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
faceplant641 Posted January 3 I've never beaten Doom 2 without cheating. The Icon Of Sin is so diametrically opposed to my idea of fun that I either idclip right to Romero or just call it quits at the end of map29. Plutonia's was somehow less frustrating, shorter elevator ride I guess, and TNT is nice enough to just give you a staircase to stand on. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

MFG38 Posted January 3 In one of my first ever playthroughs of Doom 2, I spent an embarrassing 40-something minutes wandering aimlessly around MAP13 because I couldn't find one of the keys (I forget which one). 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Agent Strange Posted January 3 Sometimes I feel like a poser for not having played a lot of the big name megawads like BTSX and such. There's only so many hours in the day and I want to play other stuff too 😔 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Terrcraft Posted January 3 The only wad I've been playing the past month is the recent ramp. I've beaten about 170ish maps. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Novaseer Posted January 3 (edited) Up until fairly recently, I'd just use the GZDoom 'resurrect' command whenever I died instead of restarting, even from a save. Now I play with saves (and normally not on GZDoom), and will continue to do so in perpetuity because fuck restarting a 45 minute level after getting hit by an 80 damage Revenant rocket. Cilian Posted January 3 I never finished doom 2 or E4 or TNT. The only IWAD I really completed is plutonia, with pistol starts and no saves so the other iwads should be way easier but.. I don't want to... 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

DankMetal Posted January 3 3 minutes ago, MFG38 said: This isn't the "unpopular opinions" thread. Shit, you're right. Silly me. In that case my only confession is that i never played TNT past map 10, not because the rest of the wad is bad or anything like that, i just forgot to play it. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Roebloz Posted January 3 I use the resurrect cheat in pretty much every single one of my Doom WAD review videos because I forget to save and don't want to start from the beginning. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Mr Masker Posted January 3 I feel bad for being on here, but not really playing Doom THAT much in a while. I went through a period of playing it a lot, but now it's not really the same. Hope I do get back to playing wads, there are loads of quality stuff here. I've still had yet to beat stuff like Eviternity, which I've considered playing through for a while now. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Li'l devil Posted January 4 I hate ruining it for you (actually, I like doing that!), but we already have a very big long running Doom confession thread that was last updated just not long ago. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Cutman 999 Posted January 4 I dropped most of the megawads i played lol, even my supposed favorite wad of all time, Speed of doom, previously i dropped it in map 17, now i'm actually trying to complete it. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
fruity lerlups Posted January 4 (edited) i have never finished Ultimate Doom and I really dont care to and I find Ultimate Doom to be miserably boring to play through after episode 1 and probabky wont play Sigil or Sigil 2 ever because it seems like more miserable Ultimate Doom. I also think the first 15 maps of Doom 2 are miserably boring and Plutonia is the only IWAD i replay since its consistently entertaining start to finish. Also if I dont die in the first 3 levels of a pwad, I get bored and stop playing. I wont finish Scythe for this reason. Edited January 4 by fruity lerlups 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

There's a a major lack of Romero and Hall levels plus the Spiderdemon is kind of a disappointment. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

I have totally been fooled by the staircase being the place to shoot from in tnt map30, instead spending several minutes running around like a headless chicken until I eventually died. This did not happen on my first playthrough of tnt either 😅🪦 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Maximum Matt Posted January 5 Two things: first, I've never completed Final Doom on UV, only on HMP. Also, even though I'm the guy who goes on and on about Maximum Doom because I played through most of it, I've never actually given the Master Levels a try - even though I really like Jim Flynn and the other guy who's got a bunch of Max Doom maps. I could say in my defence that I've WATCHED a bunch of walkthroughs of those levels, but it is still a shameful confusing thing to have to admit. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Koko Ricky Posted January 19 - Most of Doom and Doom 2's maps are well-designed, but the confusing layout of Mt. Erebus and The Citadel, as well as the mostly ho-hum secret maps in both games, are clear evidence that being in a sealed-off creative bubble can result in lousy design choices. - I sometimes fantasize about a version of Doom that leans more into the Doom Bible, or was even developed by say, a Japanese studio whose skills would have given us better sprites. - Doom 64 is in many ways a more coherent and more thoughtfully designed game than the originals, but sections like Alpha Quadrant's nearly pitch-black spectre pit is the definition of tedious. Moments like that are not fun, just frustrating. - As much respect as I have for id's OG staff, these guys were in their 20s and the egos were big. Firing Tom Hall for creative differences, wrecking the Saturn port by insisting on software rendering, and not giving any real shits about Doom's actual setting suggests a lot of growing up was needed. - I've been enjoying Blood a bit more than Doom lately as it has a ton of depth and immersion Doom lacked. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
