fefor Posted January 16, 2024 (edited) Howdy, I'm new around here, this is the second Doom map that I've made thus far but it's my first public release. Game: Doom 2 - Singleplayer Format: Boom (-complevel 9) Tested with: DSDA-Doom 0.27.3 May not run with: Chocolate-Doom or anything that doesn't support Boom. Now I suppose I could tell you a bit about the map. As for the gameplay I wanted it to be challenging without being frustrating or annoying, do expect some traps that might require playing twice, I tried to place enough ammo and health for it to be completed even in a worst case scenario but I didn't want to include too much of either. Difficulty should be around Plutonia I think, enemy placement and progression are heavily inspired by modern community releases that I've been playing recently. I did everything with the CL2 format but I switched to Boom just for a visual setpiece that doesn't interfere with the gameplay and happens outside of the playable area hah. The only lore is that it takes place inside of a castle that is being corrupted by hell while an evil presence is following you around. Some -nomo screenshots: Spoiler Download I hope you enjoy it! mapping is something that I've wanted to do for a very long time but it always felt intimidating so I'm glad that I managed to finish something, from now on I'll try my best to learn from others and hopefully improve along the way. plums Posted January 16, 2024 (edited) Great first/second map! Really hot start and some tough moments but nothing too extreme, though anyone thinking this will be easy since it's a first map is in for a surprise. dsdademo 0.27.5 fda with lots of saves: https://user.fm/files/v2-1afb90717075632c79d4f7e3206c5c2c/ctd_plumsfda.lmp I figured out the other secret after I quit the demo, would've been helpful since health is pretty low for a while, but not essential. The one I did get was definitely impactful I think, and I would probably had a much tougher time without it, though maybe that's just because I felt bad at dodging rev rockets today. fefor Posted January 16, 2024 Thank you! I just finished watching your demo, it definitely is very interesting seeing how others play and approach these encounters differently and I was very happy to see you make use of infighting, and yeah I intentionally hid the secrets from the automap as well, so far it seems everyone had troubles with the one you did miss. Spoiler also the plasma secret has a big cell pack on the cave, it's found on the right side as soon as you take the lift, it indeed does help with the outdoors area if you find it early 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Moustachio Posted January 17, 2024 (edited) Very good map! I loved the frantic combat, the level was short and sweet, and the layout always pointed me in the right direction. Don't really have any critiques. In fact, I think there's a lot to learn from this one. Great job! Love that wavy scrolling wall effect too, very creative. S3M_XM Posted January 17, 2024 Well this is a very nice introduction to yourself, but next time make sure that your archive file is zip, as source ports don't play in rar files. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Sorry you didn't like the platforming but it's understandable, they might not be everyone's cup of tea. 2 hours ago, Moustachio said: Very good map! I'm glad you had fun and that you liked those textures though I didn't come up with the idea myself for that one. 54 minutes ago, S3M_XM said: Well this is a very nice introduction to yourself, but next time make sure that your archive file is zip, as source ports don't play in rar files. My bad, it's been corrected now, thanks for letting me know. Edited January 17, 2024 by fefor 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gothic Box Posted January 17, 2024 Checks all the boxes for a good map. Fights are well designed and difficulty hovers around that good middle ground. For a second map you definitely know what you're doing. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
LadyMistDragon Posted January 17, 2024 Wasted some time looking for the other secret....but I think that things mostly turned out ok! Danger is quite palpable indeed! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
fefor Posted January 18, 2024 Thanks for the kind words everyone, it means a lot and it's very encouraging, I honestly didn't expect such positive feedback and I'm definitely motivated now. For the ones that are having trouble finding the secrets I thought I could give some hints for each... Secret #1 Spoiler All I'm going to say is that it can be found before you take the first teleporter of the level, just knowing that it's around this area is enough, I'm sure you can find something that does not *match* with the rest. Secret #2 Spoiler You've seen the plasma, you have to land on it, the solution is not a teleporter and the path to it is closer than you think 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Flyxolydian Posted January 18, 2024 Ok, call me intrigued. I'll give it a go too *post-playthough* Very good effort, especially on the combat! The starting fight feels like something that Joshy would do, and it doesn't feel like any of the fights can be cheesed (sort of, you can make the lowering floor ambush easier by camping near the yellow door). I'd call it on the upper end of Plutonia's difficulty. I died twice on my blind run (UV), but managed a single-segment on my third run. Secrets were fine by the way, didn't have any issue finding them. Looking forward to seeing more from you down the line if this is what you're already capable of! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
fefor Posted January 18, 2024 Thanks! yeah I anticipated you'd try going back to that door which is why I placed that shotgunner window (and I could have been meaner and place more of em or a tougher enemy in that window) but one reason I don't like camping that place is because the narrow corridor won't give much space to dodge and if you happen to be on low health it's harder to get out. The two methods I like going for dealing with that fight are either rushing to the red key with the RL or just going for the enemies in front of the switch, both of these places have more room to dodge the upcoming projectiles and they'll infight a lot. Also I'm glad to hear that about the secrets, I was getting worried the first one might have been too obscure. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Maribo Posted January 20, 2024 Very neat map, especially for a first public release and a second map ever. You made a great midi selection to go with it and the general tuning of the map is quite smooth, though I do like the chaotic spike of action with the floor lowering into a crowded slaughter room. Looking forward to seeing what you do next. :)ctd-maribo.zip - A casual -dsdademo UV playthrough, plays back v0.27.5 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
