Roofi Posted February 3, 2024 (edited) Story Your team's helicopter was destroyed in mid-air by an unidentified projectile from a non-human force. It is inspired by the autobiography of Romero, who lived in the city of Tucson, located next to this desert. Technical stuff and requirements : IWAD : DOOM.WAD Compatibility : Limit-removing Slot : E1M1 Custom ressources used : none , except the orange sky from E4 of Ultimate Doom. apichatpong Posted February 3, 2024 (edited) Spoiler I dig the canyoning kind of exploration and was here served. Some first part barons are touchy, some lost souls annoying but overall doable on easy skill (and I guess on medium and hard, seems that differences are mostly on items, so maybe ammo or health could be an issue, but it's the game). Last fight is survival (but with the invulnerability sphere on low skill, the start is easy and monsters do their job... still managed to die in the end because of the teleporting thing). Loved the ending room and the meaning of light goggles... Got the secrets but I'm pretty sure I missed something (a special texture intrigued me). Great map ! Async Unicorn Posted February 3, 2024 (edited) This bridge looks fabulous! Also, MIDI from E1M8 captivates me (I remember it from Doomsday of UAC masterpiece), I'll check it out! (Not to mention the orange sky, my favorite) Edited February 3, 2024 by Vanilla+Unicorn 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
plums Posted February 3, 2024 (edited) Fun map, made a demo with saves (-dsdademo 0.27.5), I die a bunch at the end fight, don't watch if you don't feel like it. Elastic collisions are a pain but oh well, that's Doom. https://user.fm/files/v2-762c7d509d3c51a22208de60260c8206/gcanyon_plums.lmp Being able to look up and down made this map much more comfortable, even if all you usually see is lava. Loved all the doomcute details, got a laugh when I realized you made the cacti damaging with floors heh Spoiler Edited February 3, 2024 by plums 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Maribo Posted February 3, 2024 Lovely map, personal highlights would be: - The doomcute cacti (and the fact that they damage you!) - Caco + Lost Soul swarm when the lower bit of the canyon sinks down post-red key grab. - That bridge!! - The aesthetic design of the finale area, the gas station is adorable and the big rocket clusterfuck of a fight on that plateau feels like a fitting end. A somewhat ditzy playthrough, -dsdademo on v0.27.5 - gcanyon-maribo.zip 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Roofi Posted February 3, 2024 (edited) Thanks for all the feedbacks ! Currently watching your playthroughs for those who record demos. 10 hours ago, plums said: Being able to look up and down made this map much more comfortable, even if all you usually see is lava. Yep, playing with the freelook can bring a certain comfort, but knowing that I never test with the freelok, I've made sure that there are as few "angel jumping" as possible without being able to see underneath. @apichatpong, FYI, the monster count remains the same in all skill settings. However, there are more health, ammo, powerups on HNTR and HMP. Looking at your comment, it doesn't seem very difficult in HNTR and HMP but I'll remove monsters if need be. About the secrets , there are some marked and some non-marked. :) Edited February 3, 2024 by Roofi 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

And as you predicted, did some nice "angel jumping". I'll add that I really liked being very disoriented during 15min and then, step by step, managed to tame the map (even if, to be honest, it took me some time to find again the way to reach the red door). 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Roofi Posted February 4, 2024 Hello, Here is the v2 of my map. The changes are cosmetic for now : - Addition of a titlepic (an image of the Sonoran Desert) - The map names displays during intermission and in the automap. The OP is updated. If everything is fine, this map will be uploaded on idgames in 1-2 weeks. GCANYON_V2.zip 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
kvothesixstring Posted February 4, 2024 Very charming map! I loved all the doomcute the cacti and the skull with glowing eyes were personal favorites. I appreciated all of non linear approaches being available to the player. I thought UV was a fair challenge. Plenty of health if you look for it. I am sure I still missed some easter eggs but the ones I found made me smile. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
LadyMistDragon Posted February 5, 2024 (edited) I'll confess, I just wanted to get it over with. The Easter eggs were all really nice (the imp as John Romero, lol) No secrets for some reason tho(: It's your best map since Ventose though, easily!! Scuba Steve Posted February 7, 2024 OLD DOOMERS, GET IN HERE! Do you remember browsing the wads directory of your PC Gamer CD and coming across gems like Hoover Dam or UAC Dead!? This map is a delightful modern take on those early pseudo-realistic Doom environments. Overturned sector trucks? Doomcute cacti? Vaguely inspired by real-life locations? UV difficulty curve similar to 1995? This has it all! Playing this made me feel thirteen-years-old again. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Searcher Posted February 7, 2024 Just picked this up and will be playing it very soon. I loved playing both Hoover Dam and UAC Dead! Many hours were spent playing and enjoying those. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Zesiir Posted February 25, 2024 An enormous map set in a canyon, with Ultimate Doom assets only? Sign me up. The verticality of it all was good fun, lots of precarious cliffs that reminded me a lot of the cliffside map from Half-Life. Sniping (and being sniped) played a big part. Cacodemon ambush at the red key was tough, a lot more challenging than I thought it was going to be, due to limited mobility. But I made it. I did find the secret backpack, though there were a few other areas that felt like they should have been secrets, like the Soulsphere on the shelf and the box of rockets inside the crate. But those are minor. All in all, a pretty ball-busting map, especially towards the end, even if you're given a zillion rockets. But also fun and creative, with it's clever level design, verticality and monster placement. And yeah, a cactus killed me once. So what. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
