Nope, it's not running on Notepad, it just generates an image which gets displayed in Notepad.

Now reuse it to render bad apple, and we have the complete thing

Then what is your definition of "running" Doom?

Notepad or Notepad++?

Spoiler

(edit: i gotta be real here and say that bad apple on notepad++ is super impressive. not only is is surprisingly smooth but also it's rare to see any rendition of bad apple capture the little details like the stars in the sky or the petals flying across

tbh this is still much closer to actually running doom than some of the other "ports" that have made the news, like the bacteria or the pregnancy test. at least it's rendering the game inside notepad.

having the code be run inside of notepad itself would be running doom. this isn't that, but having doom be playable in ascii is still pretty neat.

Don't the bacteria and pregnancy tests ones also use those things as display devices though, so this use of turning the Notepad into a display device is still the same type of port.

Rather displaying the game inside notepad. "Rendering" as in either converting image to ascii art or directly rendering in ascii art is done in a separate code I assume, which was done multiple times before (e.g. https://github.com/wojciech-graj/doom-ascii), except output was usually directed in terminal right away, but here output is directed into notepad instead.

Changing doom renderer to ascii renderer is a very cool and fun thing, but it's unclear from this video how the author has done it in his implementation. Might as well just be copypasting doom_ascii output into notepad and that's it. Which can be funny by itself of course (although appropriate credit is still due), but I think if there was some actual interesting rendering work done there, it's likely the author would explain it and upload sources and stuff.

FastDoom is a pretty cool port with a lot of rendering options, including many variations of text mode. If i remember correctly, deatsaw has played the entire episode 1 of doom in text mode on steam not that long ago.

Edit: the author of the video probably uses some custom code to """run""" Doom in notepad at this character resolution. Which is kinda cool I guess but as I said before, they could "run" Crysis just as well.

IIRC Deat also made improvements for a 16 colours mode rendering, but unsure if those made it to upstream or not.

That's nothing, I managed to get Doom to run in this very post! Doom really CAN run on anything! Science has gone INSANE! I can just sit back and watch the thousands of gaming news articles about my efforts flow in! What's next, Doom running on a piece of paper?

id never get any credit for the insane feat of running Doom on the back of the Doom box itself, smh
