roadworx Posted February 9 (edited) there's this turn-based strategy game from 1999 called jagged alliance 2, and ever since i first heard about it, i really can't stop thinking about it. it looks like such a unique, interesting game. at first it looks like x-com with its squad-based tactical combat and worldmap, but then you look a little deeper and find that what really sets it apart is the sheer amount of content in the game, with tons of different ways to finish the game, heavy rpg mechanics, npcs all over the game's world that you can interact with, even fucking interpersonal drama between your squadmates...it's as though a game suffered horrendous feature creep during development, yet somehow it managed to all come together flawlessly. and yet, it seems rare that anyone ever talks about it. it's bizarre. rn i'm waiting for a copy of the game that i bought off ebay to come so i can start playing it. in the meantime, i wanna know what you guys think of it. i wanna know what it's like and what your experiences playing it were Edited February 9 by roadworx 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
TheMagicMushroomMan Posted February 9 Jagged Alliance is a perfect example of a title I've seen mentioned many times on many lists but never even checked it out. I always imagined it being a fantasy RPG based on the name lol. It looks cool but it's not something I'd be able to play these days since I have to use a controller. Based on what I gather it was mainly popular outside of North America. Seems pretty complex. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

dasho Posted February 9 It has the greatest in-game UI (the laptop) and custom character quiz of all time, not even close. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
BGreener Posted February 9 I need to go back and finish it. I checked it out for the first time a few years ago, and it really is surprising how good it is. All my mercenaries were memorable, figuring out a team is fun, the humor is up my alley, and the combat mechanics are great. It felt overwhelming when I was first getting into it - still didn’t feel as brutal as gambling on original X-Com rookies. You can spend action points in increments to increase the accuracy of a shot. I spent the first few hours NOT knowing this, so I’m just letting you know on the off-chance you’re as silly as me. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

It´s a squad turnbased strategy game with RPG mechanics, with permadeath for your squadmembers. It´s pretty deep and complex for it´s time and allows you a variety of freedom when taking objectives. Ultimately it was a tad bit too complex and frustrating to me, since I usualy preffer single player RPG, where you dont have to manage your squad too heavily or strategy games like X-Com where your grunts are more expandable and you can rely on Soviet human wave tactics. I might give it another (5th?) chance, but these days I´m more interested in short arcade games, so I´ll see about that. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
