Herding tactic and the horseshoe tactic

The monsters always try to go where you go, so when you can't circle strafe around a big group of them, it's good to make a big horseshoe shape around the arena to drag them back and forth, leaving you room to maneuver past them at their front edge. Level designers usually don't make it that easy on you, so you have to figure out variations depending on what else is going on in the fight, the composition of the horde, etc. Sometimes you need to "herd" enemies, drawing them towards or away from specific areas, in order to win fights.

If you want detailed data, you're going to need to provide more information than "slaughter wads." What wads are you playing and what fights are giving you trouble? Do you just want to know more about these tactics in general, or are you looking for the Coincident-Okuplok-strategy-guide-style statistical breakdown? The second thing is way more time and effort intensive than people are likely to give for low-effort OPs.

It is worth mentioning that the Horseshoe Tactic works best when your 180' turnarounds (tips of the horseshoe) loop away from the horde, especially when revenans are involved. This is because turning inwards will more likely land you a projectile, especially a guided missle, to the face. Looping outwards will allow you to avoid guided missles indefinitely, or until you can find cover to allow your guided missle train to crash without you. Hopefully this helps!
