Stroggman Posted March 1, 2024 (edited) So an occasional hit on the ammo cheat key may be needed on some slaughter maps, is it ok to use it occasionally? Edited March 1, 2024 by Stroggman 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
JustAthel Posted March 1, 2024 Doom is Doom, man, so long as you're having fun with it! I will say, though, many released slaughter maps tend to give enough ammo for the player to use, in addition to / tandem with other mechanics such as infighting and ammo preservation. Nobody's gonna stop you from using the good ol' IDFA cheat, but you may wanna try to see how to manipulate the enemies (and even the environment itself!) to do the work for you! 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Lucius Wooding Posted March 1, 2024 Abuse, by definition, is misuse. You can't abuse a cheat because the whole point is to turn the game into a sandbox or prevent softlocks or otherwise to playtest maps or simply play God. You can use it or not and I don't think any of us really care if you do. Obviously competitive demo players don't allow them but that's a different matter. You could abuse game mechanics to gain an advantage while not technically "cheating" in some games, while still clearly exploiting something not intended. Something like out of bounds would be an example IMO, not cheats that were hard coded and left in the game purposely by the designers for convenience. Also, depending on your port of choice there may be an infinite ammo option or console command, or mods to the same effect. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Junglist Posted March 1, 2024 (edited) I wish there was a cheat, just to get like, twenty shot gun shells... instead of 400 bullets max everything and 200% health and armor as the cheat does. Because, certain maps fucking deprive you ridiculously of ammo / expect you to rely on infighting / give zero leeway for missed shots... whatever be the case or combination of those things, and you are two hours of time already sunk into a level and restarting the level to scrounge for ammo just sounds like ass and you wouldnt want to do that, and sometimes you just need twenty shot gun shells.... but NOT max all ammo and 200% health and armor as the cheat does, which kinda ruins the fun of the map if you do it..!! thiccyosh Posted March 1, 2024 Sure, I like to use the fullclip cheat in dsda-doom from time to time. I don't wanna tickle waves of Barons to death with the silly chaingun, I want to blow them up into pieces! 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

For GZDoom you can open the console and type 'give shell 20'. note that that's shell not shells. The other ammo types are clip, rocketammo, and cell. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Faceman2000 Posted March 1, 2024 Every couple months you pop up and ask if it’s okay to cheat in various ways and always get the same answers. Why? Why are you so worried about it? 10 Quote Share this post Link to post
riktoi Posted March 1, 2024 The idgames police will personally come to your doorstep and ask you to surrender your device of play if you were to cheat. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Mr. Alexander Posted March 1, 2024 (edited) It's probably not actually needed for Combat Shock 2, so you probably need to adjust the way you're playing somehow if you don't want to cheat, but if you just want to have fun blasting demons, mash that cheat key all you want. Gothic Posted March 1, 2024 (edited) No it's not, the engine has a hard-coded function that will make your computer combust after using cheats a certain number of times. This is kept in all doom sourceports, except Doomsday. Edited March 1, 2024 by Gothic 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

ObserverOfTime Posted March 2, 2024 Play Doom any way you want to, as long as you're having fun with it. That's the most important part. It's a (largely) single player game so use the cheats to help you progress, have fun, or just to goof around. Sometimes I don't feel like playing "normally" and just want to decompress while blasting monsters without worry. Nothing wrong with that either. I am also not the fastest, mechanically speaking, and sometimes freeze the monsters just to reposition, get the right weapon out, and continue the carnage. It's cool. As long as you don't use cheats for nefarious purposes (like swindling others in demos, brag about fake accomplishments, etc.) it's all fair game. Don't feel bad, cheats were put into the game to be used. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Stroggman Posted March 3, 2024 It is no fun running out of cells when you have a huge platoon of revs and a big army of cacos, doom is a shooting game that is meant to be fun, not a drugery so by all means hit the ammo cheat key and have a blast! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

maxmanium Posted March 3, 2024 I use cheats in any situation I perceive to be unfair for any reason. Like if I have been at 1% health for quite a while with no healing items, and it throws another slaughter wave at me. I'll just use IDBEHOLDV. I also used noclip a few times in Doom 2016 to backtrack for secrets and stuff when it locks you out for no reason. For some reason though that requires a separate DLL file to re-enable it. Start on lower difficulties and work your way up so you can develop the skills you need to get there instead of playing above your skill range and using cheats to supplement. Play the way you have fun, but I don’t think that’s the best way to perfect your technique if that’s what you’re striving for. There’s no shame in playing on lower skill levels. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

ObserverOfTime Posted March 4, 2024 Some slaughter maps let you use the infinite BFG or supply you with a ridiculous amount of ammunition, more than you could ever reasonably use. Other slaughter maps on the other hand have a specific and measured amount of ammunition placed in strategic places, and not running out of ammo is part of the intended way of playing. In the former maps I don't really feel bad hitting the ammo key, in the later sort of maps I kind of do feel a bit bad, because I know I basically just "lost" the game by failing to secure ammunition resupply properly. If I'm playing "seriously" that usually means reloading a save or something, if I'm just goofing around though I could not care less, lol. If hitting the ammo key allows me to stay alive a bit longer to see what's up ahead then so be it. Sometimes I start out by playing "seriously", then realize I'm in over my head a few maps into it and seamlessly transition to "just goofing around". If I can lower the skill I give that a go, if I still eat dirt then I usually have to "gid gud" or play something more appropriate for my skill level. But, like I said earlier, if I (or you, or anyone else) just want to kill some monsters to decompress without having to worry, then that's absolutely alright. I find punching demons in the face to be a great way to relieve stress. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
scarredout Posted March 4, 2024 It's your choice, I personally dislike ammo starvation maps so idfa is a very common keystroke for me, but again it's your choice on whether to hit the ammo buttons, people won't send landmines to your doormat 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
