[-cl 21] Firefly.wad (RC2)

Wow. These look incredible and pack a fair punch. UV is really stretching my rusty skills. Here's some dsda (v0.25.6) demos for the first three maps. Several of the fights gave me an ass kicking, but I managed to find strategies for everything. The fights are tough and exacting, but nothing feels unfair. Ammo is quite constrained in places. I felt like I missed a backpack in map03 maybe?

Map07's fights were originally a lot harder to the point where I wasn't really having much fun with them (I'd consider myself a rather average slaughter player), so some of them are a bit easy to those who can stomach more crazy stuff (in the current version). Watching Vile's stream however made me realise quite a few fights across the whole wad definitely didn't need megaspheres or that much health, so I'll push an RC2 eventually to re-tune some of the health balancing in those fights.

I for one appreciate slaughter with a safety-net. Makes me feel better getting through 'tough' maps only dying a few times, as opposed getting destroyed by fights beyond my comprehension.

Hihi, new update! check the OP for changelog and RC2. Thanks to everyone who's played so far and given feedback!

It's an incredible set, I've been keeping my eye on its release ever since seeing screenshots during development. Some sets just have that magic, that special mood. I love these kinds of cohesive sets that keep their style and look matching from map to map but develop it along the way. One beautiful arena after another. I didn't even try to beat the fights, I played invincibility on and admired the designs, the texturing, everything... I'm going to just walk through these with no monsters at some point. I can't describe what it is, the mood just hits right. Also can't wait to see demos which I think will be recorded from these maps for sure.

Hah, it's nice to hear you're still enjoying it even with iddqd :)

Ryiron and Sleepyvelvet, dw is not letting me quote your posts for some reason but I'll take a look at the demos in my free time. Thanks for playing so far! There's no backpack in 03 :P

Yeah I quite like the safety nets too, it's just that some of these powerups do get carried over if you ration them in a certain way, which wasn't really intended. There are some fights where you'll have a megasphere left over for the next fight which might not even give you more than 100 health.

I played the first 2 maps on UV but decided to play the rest on HMP.  Mostly because Im not the best doom player, and dont want to end up frustrated. So far up to map05 its been a fun and fair challenge on HMP.  A lot of mappers HMP seems to be my UV compared to my maps I design UV around lol.  Will Finish it soon!

You can just pussy out of this little fight here, which is a little strange. Anyways, I'm liking the set so far. MAP01 was really cramped and pissed me off really easily. MAP02 is much better so far.

Demo for map04: ff04-ryrion.zip (dsdademo v0.25.6).

Some of the cramped fights with the cybers gave me a fair amount of trouble. How the cybers decide to behave can either make the fights quite easy, or really hard. The big floating arena is cool. I don't quite get the first part with the viles on the tower since they are very easy to dodge, and there's nothing else going on. The second part I think I cheesed a little. Another very fun, and epic looking map. Thanks for making these.

Right, just finished this one on UV, some thoughts:

Firstly, like everyone has said, the visuals are stunning. Really gives off Sunder/Abandon vibes, and there's a nice mix of themes throughout. Combat's top notch too, there's some cool gimmicky encounters, and some straight all ball-busters too (the Rev/Manc/Hell Knight wave in map 3, good GOD).

Map 07 was an interesting one, as the smaller fights tend to be the harder than the big ones (apart from the final fight, but I figured that one out so it's all good, did make me rage for a while). The triple megasphere run about 2/3 was through is definitely the hardest part of the map, that ending is just MEAN. The map has one big issue for me though, and that's the caged Archies fight. Not sure if I missed it, but if not there needs to be a switch/trigger to crush them after you've beaten the fight. It's not really hard to clean up, just mega tedious. Everything else is fine as far as I can tell. The highlight is definitely the BFG fight though, what a spectacle, and really reminds me of Abandon Map 11's final fight. I'd say that the map's hard enough, just because there's a lot of fights and only a few of them are what I'd call "easy".

Might try to do some UVMAX runs for the ol' YT channel. Not really sure how many will be saveless though, this is quite a hard pack lmao.

TL;DR, incredible pack, killer stuff man!

Really enjoying this wad. Trying to UVMAX saveless (the first few levels at least) and stuck on map 02. Damn ammo is limited and you've got to play perfectly. Good fun!

Couple of questions about map06 if I may:

- how do you open the yellow bars in the western building (leading to the red key)? I can’t seem to open it.

- how do you get the secret key card in the western building (looks like you have to walk around the outer perimeter, but I can’t find the access point)?

- any tips for the fight in the small room with the tiny pillar? - pushing the switch reveals hell nobles in front of two archviles, revs on a raised platform and mancs on a slightly higher platform. I can’t seem to find a consistent method, as there’s no where to hide from the viles.

Cheers!

Spoiler

Q1: Shootable switch across the map from the orange key. Or if it's the other switch, it's hidden in the same building, near steps.
Q2: Platform onto the side wall from triple Archvile/Pain Elemental fight.
Q3: Git gud/lucky. Not joking, I've already SS'ed this map and that fight sucks. Just get it over with ASAP really.

Cheers boss.

I suspected as much re: point 3. Don’t think I’ll bother UVMAXing this one saveless. I like counter play to factor in, and there doesn’t seem to be any with this fight. Maybe placing the viles in front of the nobles would mitigate this a bit.

Done 1, 2 and 3 UVMAX saveless so far. 4 is doable for me, 5 maybe.

Thanks again!

Yeah, I've only got 5 (and 7, but I ain't doing that!) left, best of luck with map 04. I got extremely lucky with that one...

Cheers, mate. Final fight of map 5 is scary lol. Don't think I'll do a saveless run of that one on second thought...

Enjoying 7 now. Definitely not going to attempt saveless, but UVMAX is fun :)

Yow! Can’t for the life of me work out the secret in map01, think I’m being dense. I know it’s via a shootable switch in the wall but can’t work out precisely how to shoot it lol. Wickedly evil mapset!
