Official mod support in the works?

I always wanted this idea to be brought to life, it would be a step into the future!

Its probably unlikely but the ability to make custom levels (like actual custom levels, not just existing levels with different stuff in them) would really bring me back to the game

It would be cool if someone can bring invasions back intot he game.  I know there is a MOD for it but nobody plays that regularly.

 

I want the ability to add in new assets, maybe even new AI and levels into the game.  Better yet ... which would require EXTENSIVE knowledge of Idtech6/7 and megatextures, to convert the MP maps from 2016 into Doom Eternal.  Bring back FFA deathmatch within the Eternal engine!  Fuck ill pay for it with my own savings if it can be done.

In particular, this old quote that I remember from Marty before Eternal's release stands out:

Personally, 'DoomModPortal.exe' sounds pretty unambiguous to me. It would be quite a treat if they had something lined up for the 4 year release anniversary on the 20th of this month.

It's most likely not anything like that, game developers always do minor changes to the libraries and code for their past games like that. But if it is I wonder if they are going to let people install the mod that unlocks all of the paywalled skins. They are probably not going to let modders have access to any of their tools either so it's not like the modding capabilities of the older games with open source code.

If only there was a way to map for the modern Doom games, but no, of course there isn't....

Sounds nice, but remember Snapmap? That was supposed to be modern Doom modding, in theory, but in practice it offered scarce little in real options for map makers. So it died pretty quickly.

 

I would be pleasantly surprised if the game, which sells rather cheap nowadays, would get a major update like this years later. But knowing how generous id has been lately (the quake/doom remasters/re-releases; giving away Doom 3 BFG and expansion packs for free), it wouldn't be entirely out of the question.

No it wasn't. It was supposed to be a solution to having user generated levels with a low technical barrier of entry. It's also still active, meaning it frankly succeeded in what it needed to do compared to its counterpart RAGE, which was literally their internal development tools and produced so little content people aren't even sure it has it.

Snapmap has new maps still? Wow that's news to me. Shit, when I first picked up the game in like 2018 or something, it seemed to me that all the Snapmap maps were like from 2016 or 2017, and were pretty dead. Even then, all you could do was just choose one from a small handful of pre-made rooms and throw enemies in there. It always struck me as kind of a joke compared to any of the Doom Builders for classic Doom. The 2016 multiplayer though, on the other hand, was sorely underrated. It was nothing amazing or revolutionary, but it was a lot of fun and got way more criticism than it deserved.

 

RAGE probably doesn't have much of a fanbase because well, it doesn't have the brand name of Doom. I've never even played it. I think I played a little of RAGE 2, but only because I got it for free on Epic at some point. Isn't RAGE more of like an open world game anyway? Not quite the same as Doom's style of levels.

SnapHak is a thing, which is probably why SnapMap still persists.

I think that's how the SnapMap community even did things that somehow weren't done in the thing originally like using MP weapons such as the Grenade Launcher or Reaper.

Yeah you're right. I had no idea until today there's a burgeoning renaissance of maps for Doom 2016's Snapmap through this SnapHak. I just played part 1 of a custom campaign with a really cool level and environmental storytelling.

In the case of RAGE 1 not really. There's these large hub areas where you get missions and stuff with even a bit of driving, but much of the game is segmented into completely separate maps and a lot of these play out like typical linear FPS levels. But yeah, even if its development tools didn't have such a high learning curve, I doubt that the modding scene would've taken off given how supremely forgettable the game itself is.

Does this mean I can play Doom Eternal on the PS4 with a cool custom skin or new enemy type or map? Hell yeah! Unfortunately, that means not all of them will be great… and eventually HDoom Eternal might happen, too… but I am still all in for mod support!
