Sensitive-Sky Posted March 15 (edited) Hi, This is my first map I've ever made and I'm planning to do a 32 map megawad eventually. Since its my first map, I would like constructive criticism for parts that can improved in the map and my overall mapping style :) Compatibility: Vanilla Compatible IWAD: Freedoom 2 (Doesn't work with the Doom 2 iwad) Recommended Difficultly: HMP Tested Source Port: Woof! and Chocolate Doom PWAD: void.wad Music (voidmus.wad): Title Screen (continuum.mid - Oh No, A Cyberemond (sic)) and for the level itself (continuum.mid - Punch Your Way Through) Map Editor Used: Eureka (some of it) and Slade 3 (most of it) Map Number: 01 Map Title: The Sign... void-level1.zip Edited March 18 by Sensitive-Sky Screenshots and extra info 6 Quote Share this post Link to post
Baron T. Mueriach Posted March 21 (edited) Pretty good for your first map. Definitely a good mixture between both linear and non-linear designs. There was definitely some questionable texture placement, try using bordering textures more often (things like DOORSTOP and SUPPORT3 and 2 are excellent choices). I'd suggest you make larger solo WAD's before creating a MEGAWAD, but that's just my opinion. Overall, it's good. And you might wanna reconsider using Freedoom, lots of people hate and refuse to play Freedoom WAD's. If you don't have the money for them try going to [WAREZ LINK REMOVED] You probably already knew about this, but if not, you didn't hear it from me lol Edited March 21 by Obsidian 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Sensitive-Sky Posted March 21 (edited) @Baron T. Mueriach Thank you for your feedback (and the link), I'm making a tech base type level and I'll definitely be using more border textures (start area of map 2 screenshots). I think you're right about narrowing the scope of the wad, some of my favorite wads are small 5 map wads like Lunatic and Running Late. I would like to make a megawad in the future sometime, but making small map sets can help me get more efficient with the tools I'm using (eureka, deutex, slade, etc) and with mapping in general, allowing me to make a better megawad. With Freedoom, I bought the Doom iwads a while ago on Steam. However, I want to make more wads for Freedoom because there's not many of them out of respect for the project. I hope I can make levels that are great enough for anyone who doesn't like Freedoom to give a Freedoom wad a try. I might make a wad for the Doom 2 iwad one day, but I like the idea of having a fully free wad with free music (CC-BY/CC-BY-SA/CC0) and free graphics. I end up playing most wads with Freedoom rather than using the regular doom iwads, so I can't help but stick with this decision for now. Also here's the latest version of map 01 (it also has map 2 which just has the starting area with nothing to do in). It has several changes to map 01 like adding more border textures, reduced detailing in certain areas to prevent visplane errors, removed the "tutti fruity" effect on some textures, and more. The music in the second level is "Airport Attack" by continuum.mid. void.zip Edited March 21 by Sensitive-Sky 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Freedoom is a very interesting project, and while many don't like it, it's hard to disregard the effort that went into it. Good job with the border textures, definitely cleans up parts of the map and makes it look nicer overall. And good luck on the tech/base styled level, those can be quite tricky to get inspiration for. I have faith you'll do good though! 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Lonespacemarine Posted April 4 (edited) Very good starting level, I really like it. the sky box however, recommend to use the night skybox from freedoom in the later stages. I'm going to post a video about this project right now. Also consider adding hight variations in the starting area Edited April 4 by Lonespacemarine 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Sensitive-Sky Posted April 4 (edited) @Lonespacemarine Thank you for your feedback :) I do like that sky box, but this is intended to be the first level of the project I'm working on. I chose this sky box specifically because I wanted players to think about hell being slowly bought on earth with portals such these. I added more height variation, I think it turned out better. The zip file is the latest version, however there's a lot files in it that don't matter as of right now (.txt files and info files) the files to launch are the midi pack wad, the wad itself, and the dehacked file for level names on the automap. abyssal-domain-alpha.zip Edited April 5 by Sensitive-Sky 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Sensitive-Sky Posted April 5 @Lonespacemarine Thank for you posting this video on my level and the feedback, but that's an older version of the level. The latest version is called "abyssal-domain-alpha.zip" in the thread. JackDBS Posted April 6 (edited) Yeah I suggest doing smaller projects before a megawad. Not even some of the greatest mappers of all time, like Ribbiks, have solo megawads under their belt. Only do a megawad if you are completely committed, have enough ideas, and are insane enough (like me :)) It looks pretty nice for Vanilla btw Edited April 6 by JackDBS 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Unfortunately, yes I like to play with iddqd on during reviews Edited April 6 by Lonespacemarine 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
