genitalgrinder Posted March 20 Dead Simple, boring and symmetrical layout with barely any enemies. You have a higher chance of killing yourself with rockets on Entryway than you do dying on Dead Simple. The only redeeming aspect of Dead Simple are the four landmines invisibility spheres. It teaches new players to never pick up landmines invisibility spheres in projectile-heavy maps. (Unofficially, it has also given me severe MAP07 PTSD whenever I play megawads) 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Logamuffin Posted March 20 For me the worst levels are really long ones that may not be *the worst* from a technical/design standpoint, but are still bad and thus outperform the REALLY bad ones (like Nirvana, Habitat, etc) in pound for pound suckage. So for me Mill, Admin Center, and Limbo take the cake. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

It was bad enough that id replaced it themselves with a new map in the Jaguar port. Why... have... I... got... to... punch... all... these... demons?! Phew, there's one! If only that shotgun were replaced with a berserker pack, the level would be fixed 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

bobstremglav Posted March 20 Maximum Doom Surprising how I don't see Fortress of Mystery here (E2M9) I love all classic doom games, but personally I just don't like E1 because of typical setting and very easy gameplay 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

It's surprising what gets listed here when we have such an incredibly lazy effort to choose. There's other bad ones but E2M9 is a complete non-starter, I wouldn't even describe what it has to offer as 'gameplay'. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

You got two choices: either shoot yourself through a small group of big monsters trying not to waste your ammo or just run past them to the exit, hoping that they won't hit you in the back. Yeah, some gameplay... 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Herra Monologi Posted March 20 Dead simple was one of my favourite maps as kid even thought it didn't feel very hard even then. I also kind of liked city levels although some of them were frustrating. But It was so cool idea to have "real city" levels in doom, I had not seen anything like that in dosgaming. Spawning wats I never liked but Dis is more boring. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
EPICALLL Posted March 20 Honestly, I really don't like containment area, and it's entirely because of the MIDI. Every time I play that map, I'm reminded I have to listen to that MIDI, and I just straight up skip the map. The song is annoying, very annoying. It would have been just fine had it not been for the off-key, poorly syncopated wailing that occurs as the "chorus" of the song. I straight up made a 1-MIDI MIDI pack just so I don't have to listen to that track. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Forgotten Soul Posted March 20 I think it's Map21:Bad Dream from Master Levels. It is some sectors and circle arena with cyberdemons and red skullkey. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Li'l devil Posted March 20 (edited) According to the Doom wiki, the worst level, at least in TNT: Evilution, is Habitat. It says right there.https://doomwiki.org/wiki/MAP22:_Habitat_(TNT:_Evilution) Edited March 20 by Li'l devil 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Roofi Posted March 20 I don't know but I want to say that "The inmost dens" is extremly overrated, just bland and brown. I never liked this map whereas the community seems to praise it a lot compared to some other maps. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

It says right there.https://doomwiki.org/wiki/MAP22:_Habitat_(TNT:_Evilution) [citation needed] I don't really know why, but I find E2M3 really boring and always hate having to play it. I think the music choice has like 60% to do with this, the intermission music is great for the 20-second interval it's designed for but it feels so flat and wrong in a map. Nirvana may be a really lame and poo ugly way to introduce Hell but it's short and has some good Sandy Peterseney ideas here and there at least. The only thing I can remember about E2M3 is that it uses BROWNWEL, that's pretty cool. BROWNWEL is cool. I like The Chasm and Fortress of Mystery and the Mill and the Drake O'Brien TNT maps and several of the other ones people tend to hate but I've already described why in detail elsewhere. E3M1 and E3M7 are definite contenders, both having pretty boring unchallenging gameplay, but in some way I think they at least set the mood right--I actually really like that E3M7 has such a low monster count, makes it feel a lot more forbidding. So I can't name them as "worst", not to me anyway. Habitat is pretty objectively terrible. I like that 95% of it is optional even if that's completely not intentional. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
noisebloom Posted March 20 9 hours ago, Maximum Matt said: Disappointed nobody mentioned Nirvana or Unruly Evil yet. Nirvana isn't great, but I don't think Unruly Evil is bad. It's really easy for where it's placed in the episode, but I think the difficulty curve of E4 is all over the map anyway (so I play a "reordered" version, anyway). 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
bioshockfan90 Posted March 20 Yeah naw after playing through TNT for like the third time recently it's gotta be Habitat. Metal and River Styx are up there but I can excuse most of TNT as wanting to stick to a plot line or experimentalism, but Habitat makes so many utterly bizarre design choices that culminate in pure asinine garbage. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
ReaperAA Posted March 20 3 hours ago, yakfak said: my fave official doom level is Gotcha! thanks for asking Funnily enough, Gotcha while not my least favorite map of the iwads, is probably my least favorite Romero map. I think that map loses all steam after the SMM vs Cyber fight. I think my least favorite maps of every of iwads are: Doom 1: E3M7: Limbo. Purely about memorizing optimal path through damaging floor mazes. Meh. E3M5 is up there as well when it comes to my least favorites. Doom 2: Map12: Factory. This map is usually where my casual Doom 2 playthroughs end. TNT Evilution: Habitat is generally an easy answer for most, but it's nowhere near my least favorite map. I think my least favorites would either be Map21 or Map25. Barons Den in particular just makes me go bleh. Plutonia: I don't think there's any map in Plutonia I consider to be really bad or anything, but if I have to put a couple, I would be Hunted and Cyberden. The viles in Hunted are easy to deal with and the hardest part of the map is the navigation through the maze. And Cyberden is just, well fighting cyberdemons one by one in the big bland arena and do some other small fights in between. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
DreadWanderer Posted March 20 'Habitat' is all kinds of atrocious, but I'm also very displeased with 'Downtown'. No, it's not just the damn arrow, it's simply confusing and doesn't really go anywhere in terms of pacing or visuals or anything else I can think of. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

My theory is that people love it so much because it comes after 2 levels that people find tedious, ugly and unnecessarily big (cringe opinion btw, Downtown is peak). The inmost dens is really cool, don't get me wrong, but i think it's not that imppressive as a map. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
