What if DOOM released in 1996? Well, Nobody Told Me About id may have a pretty good answer to that question. This is a gameplay mod for GZDoom that replicates various Build Engine quirks from games like Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, Shadow Warrior and Powerslave.

This mod has been in the works since summer 2019. It's been completely rebooted in early 2023 to be less of a trash heap and more faithful to its sources. Here's a list of its features:

  • Player movement and animations have been completely changed - you are less slippery, can move in the air and even have neat little details that can be toggled off anytime such as flinching from long falls and scanning your keys on locked doors to unlock them.
  • Your arsenal is a whole lot flashier than before. Your Pistol is faster to shoot at the cost of having to reload it occasionally. Don't feel like wasting shotgun ammo on a single Zombieman? Use your Trusty Boot. Some rocket boxes and dead zombies may also have Hand Grenades - use them to clear corners!
  • The monsters mean serious business this time. Zombies can duck and lob grenades, Imps jump over ledges and Demons and Spectres lunge at you. Hell, even Barons of Hell and Hell Knights won't be taking any of your circlestrafing! ...Oh, did I mention that Revenants also have jetpacks now?
  • Some powerups like the Berserk Pack, Radiation Suit and Light Amplification Goggles are now inventory items. Portable Medkits also replace Soulspheres outside of secret areas by default.
  • Extra content for various WADs such as AD MORTEM, AUGER;ZENITH, DOOM 64 for DOOM II, Eviternity, MAYhem 2019 and Scythe 2! (Make sure to load NTMAi after any of those WADs, though)

i haven't played many mapsets with this, but i'd recommend playing AUGER;ZENITH or a vanilla patched version of Extermination Day with this mod (since both mapsets work really well with the jumping and ducking features in gzdoom, which are crucial for this mod's gunplay)

i also worked on the intro animation for this mod (although can't sleep did most of the heavy lifting with animating, i mostly did the materials and models)

HELL YEAH! I love the vibes of this mod! The little bits and changes all come together to make me feel like I'm playing Doom on a different engine, and the attention to detail is fantastic. Glad to see it here!

One of my favorite mods, played it a lot. The only disadvantage is not infinite berserk, because of which some maps can just come to softlock, it would be worth fixing this point, or just add CVAR to switch to normal berserk.

Just wanted to pop in and say that I sent that gif of the intro to a discord server I frequent with no context and someone replied to it with

no inbetweens

In addition to berserk, it would also be worth fixing the height of the player's view. On ado2022 E1M1 without mouselook difficult to get the last secret with blue armor near the exit, because there you need to shoot the button. For now with NTMAI it is impossible to hit the button, because the player shoots above the level of the button. It would be nice to tweak these values to:
Player.ViewHeight 41;
Player.AttackZOffset 8;

Also started going through Epic 2 with this mod. How gorgeous it feels, like running a new chapter of Powerslave.

freelook is okay if you still respect the puzzles. i play doom 2 with jumping and i still don't jump over the ledge in the gantlet

That too, but that's not really what I meant in this case. I meant NoFreeLook as a style of play, after all that's how I feel most comfortable playing doom. And NTMAI has full compatibility with that play style, except for that very small point. I just don't think anyone would lose by tweaking those constants in the player a bit. However, locally I fixed this point in my copy of the mod and now everything plays fine in this aspect.
