stephyesterday Posted March 31 (edited) I imagine what people usually think of when they think of trees in Doom are either the two decorative tree things that the game comes with, or custom thing resprites like you might see in Eviternity. Either way, a much less-seen form of trees are sector-based, built with lines and midtextures and all that, rather than just plopping down an object. Recently, after trying my hand at making some, I've gotten kind of obsessed with these, and have been on the lookout for any example of these types of trees out in the wild- big, small, grandiose, shitty, it doesn't matter; if you've seen a sector tree (or have made one yourself), share it here! To start: a few of my own, and a few examples from other wads i've come across. Lizardcommando Posted March 31 I tried making a forest using a ton of simple sectors for my mapset Battle for Toad Hall 20XX, but it more or less still looked pretty bland looking. It also doesn't help that the shadows will not look good in anything but the Doom Legacy sector lighting mode. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
antares031 Posted March 31 UniDoom3 MAP04, sector + midtex combined. Ghoul's Forest 3, sloped sectors + midtex vines. Going Down MAP25, a sector art. 13 Quote Share this post Link to post
HiMyNameIsChair Posted March 31 One of my own from MAP15 of Doomworld Dating Simulator that I made with Dististik. Quite proud of it, considering it was my first time ever making one. 7 Quote Share this post Link to post

Two of the best things about having heavy treetop cover in a map like this is creating a gloomy atmosphere, and an opportunity to have varying sector lighting for satisfying environments, both of which you've pulled off well here. 9 hours ago, antares031 said: UniDoom3 MAP04, sector + midtex combined. Cyriak's control over sectors is genuinely unbelievable. Ty for the great pics! 1 hour ago, HiMyNameIsChair said: One of my own from MAP15 of Doomworld Dating Simulator that I made with Dististik. Quite proud of it, considering it was my first time ever making one. This is fantastic, let alone for a first-time! Slightly biased, as this is my personal favorite type of sector tree (really big and wide roots with a slightly narrow trunk, and a huge bulbous hunk of leaves) but still, excellent work. OTEX leaves being peak textures as per usual. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
129thVisplane Posted March 31 shameless self promotion of the janky tree that grows out of the initial hell portal in Trouble Over the Rainbow: the same wad also contains a dark forest that, however, is too dark to take any good screenshots of but trust me 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
Shepardus Posted March 31 (edited) From Corrupted Cistern (using Lutz's screenshots since they're better than what I would have taken): From Unknown: Edit - A couple more I remembered: Hexen: Veil of Darkness uses sector trees/tree-textured walls as the map layout in its forest map, as well as tree decorations and Hexen's destructible trees. Lost Civilization MAP07 also does the "corridors of tree textures" thing. Edited March 31 by Shepardus 12 Quote Share this post Link to post
