Lizardcommando Posted April 2 Eviternity, especially when you reach the last set of maps that take place in heaven(?). 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Logamuffin Posted April 2 Going Down. Each level has it's own gimmick which keeps the action fresh while also flowing together so seamlessly and having a narrative on top of that. How???!!! That mapset single-handedly convinced me that mouldy is the greatest doom mapper to ever live. Spoiler And I think the ending with it's "it was all a dream... psych!" fake out with the icon of sin appearing in the wall is one of the greatest moments in any map ever. Someone already mentioned it but Hell Ground, specifically Map04: Warp of Time. That map is freaking huge and amazingly cinematic (as MtPain put it "A feature film in doom map form"). Eternal is another candidate for GOAT in my book. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Ozcar Posted April 2 I'm surprised no one mentioned the "batman" wad, I thought that total conversion was impressive for vanilla doom 2 WAD. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Yep, still need to finish that off. Also, Aliens TC. A lotta early TCs are very impressive. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Sneezy McGlassFace Posted April 2 (edited) People already mentioned some amazing wads, so I won't be repeating those. But I haven't seen any mention of Hideous Destructor yet. Let me sing some praises: It's a mod that completely overhauls doom's game mechanics to turn it into a tactical shooter. Think of Tarkov with demons. How cool is that! I grew up with Arma, and this kind of more methodical mil-sim style gameplay really appeals to me. Having to manage bleeding from gunshot wounds, burns from fireballs, filling magazines by hand, getting gunned down within seconds.. whether you like that idea or not, it's a remarkable achievement in doom. Plus, it's a solid piece of game design - they took every doom mechanic, and tried to spin it in a different way. And then take their new ideas, and weave them into the game to create something special. Your guns can jam, you can get heart-attack from overdosing on stimpacks, higher demons have shields that are better penetrated by high caliber bullets, use explosives to break through walls/doors, the list is endless. The mod has such a strong sense of identity it's confident enough to be willing to alienate great many players. If you hate it, I totally get it. But that also means the target audience gets exactly what we want. It doesn't feel like doom, it doesn't try to. It's using the engine and the stock assets to craft an entirely different experience. I wouldn't blame you for seeing all the changes as a bunch of superfluous, tedious bullshit. But for me, if it were a standalone game release, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. There's nothing like it out there. Edited April 2 by Sneezy McGlassFace 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
