New release at Github

Hello.

 

One thing first. I know that there is the DRD Devbuilds page to get the latest version of EE and i personally use that and have no problem.

 

But there was a time i did not know that page, and i think there are other users that don't know it and download the latest release from Github.

So they use the three year old Forseti release.

 

That release does not contain such enhancements like:

 

- Multithreaded renderer (a really big performance bump on big portal heavy maps)

- UDMF per texture offsets

- Slopes that are NOT rendered only.

- texture skewing

- particle fountain effects.

 

And that are only those things i noticed as i loaded up my ever-in-progress selfmade UDMF map testwise with the old Forseti release.

There are surely more improvements that came after the Forseti release that are used from other maps.

 

And in my opinion most of those things i noticed are too good features to not use them.

 

Or in other words, when a player uses a map with those features and the latest GitHub release, the map contains many errors. Textures got misaligned.
When using floor slopes as ramps, you walk below the floor and so on.

 

Btw DOOM Wiki lists that EE features "render only" slopes.

That is correct for the latest official release at Github, but EE can do much more when using the latest dev-build.

 

 

Would it not be better for many users when the release on Github gets a bump to an version that contains all those great features that came up the last three years?

 

Not everyone asks at Doomworld why the map is screwed up and then the map and/or EE is bad, because they have the last official release and don't know where to get or that there are actual dev-releases with newer/better features.

 

Another scenario. If a mapper is new to EE and tests UDMF out with it, the mapper could think that some features don't work when using the Forseti release. Ultimate DOOM Builders auto-alignement uses per texture offsets meanwhile as simple example.
