Scileboi Posted April 7 (edited) Doom 2 in Song Only was a project started by Johnny Cruelty in January 22, 2023 which aimed to gather maps made around the names of the theme songs of Doom 2. The development took a year, and eventually came to a halt. In order to not simply throw away mappers progress, this version of the wad was compiled by a group of the mappers of said project. DankMetal Posted April 7 I didn't expect this specific project to suddenly come back from the dead. Congrats! 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
reefer Posted April 7 haven't heard of this project until now, I'll have to give it a shot. Looks sick! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

What we do have is pretty cool tho. To clarify: I only pulled out my two maps because I didn't agree with how the project manager (not Johnny) handled things for the Amalgoom project. I let them know that as long as they and the co-manager were in charge of this project, I didn't want to be associated with it. If you're the current lead and you're still interested, I'd be fine with submitting my two maps as well. I'd be more than happy to, because I'm fairly proud of them, they do things none of the other maps in the project do, and they got me into Doom mapping again. I think they'd be a good addition to the project, to bump up the level count. If not, then I absolutely understand and you don't need to elaborate further. I'm really happy this project saw the light of day either way, because there's a lot of really interesting ideas here. My personal favorite is "Between Levels", actually. The Royal We Posted April 8 (edited) Congratulations on the project! I've followed the development from afar, and I'm glad they've managed to gather all this interesting material and release it. I can imagine it was quite a job! I'm looking forward to playing these maps soon. Edited April 8 by The Royal We 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

I just did the compilation and upload because DG doesnt have time anymore. Your maps were among of my faves so I´m gonna update it with your maps and a new titlepic then put a lid on it for good. DoomGappy Posted April 8 Congrats on the release, even if partial. This is a project which had a very cool idea and some of the maps are great. I wish I could have helped compile all maps and reach out to all the mappers, as the idea was to not let people's work go to waste, but I wouldn't be able to dedicate time to doing all that with the other projects I'm also helping lead to conclusion. Thanks for taking the reins, Scileboi. I hope to meet many of you down the line in other projects and have fun while doing so. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Xeebleton Posted April 8 (edited) congrats on the release! it was fun to make my map! however, there is a small issue, you seemed to have tagged the wrong guy for my map DOOM 2 (tho it could have been due to confusion as I have changed my username lol). Also, the titlepic seems to crash ports like dsda-doom, as it uses a png file format instead of lmp. Edited April 8 by Xeebleton 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

LadyMistDragon Posted April 9 I wondered what exactly this would produce, if a take-off on the Spain megawad would lead to some much admired creativity. And indeed it has! Some of these maps have plenty of Doomcute (perhaps as they should). The first couple were pretty predictable (and not so good) but Between Levels was a very clever interpretation of the title and besides that, some of the other maps ("Suspense" or like "The Demon's Dead" or "Message for the Arch-vile) were either good or showed some kind of aesthetic. I do hope that maps like "Suspense" eventually get their music replaced with the corresponding midi but as a first release, it's very nice! 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Tiramisu Posted April 10 My map for this has the wrong music (should be I Sawed the Demons), and the wrong sky (should be DOOM 2 episode 1's sky). The latter could be easily fixed by adding the texture back and switching the sky transfer texture to it, although if I were you I would much rather remove the DOOM 1 skies altogether, instead - they seem to me like a very unnecessary change that muddies the authors' original visions for the maps. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
LoatharMDPhD Posted April 10 (edited) // got some very minor tweaks to submit, ill send em in a day or two, doesn't change much just the normal exit behavior and the positioning of a secret crusher, and the positioning of a troublesome tree in map32. and yeah, skies are wrong.. // oh and german peter, i loved your maps, let them be shared, don't let the sour taste of internet bickering get you down. also after map32 it crashes back to the main menu, could add a map 33 as an interlude and kill the player to go back to 16 as map 15's secret exit is nice and walter and i both independently decided to shitpost 50 shades of greytall and it really flows nice. DiceByte Posted April 11 Seems interesting. What would between levels look like? And I am sure I can take a good LONG look at Countdown to Death… 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Tiramisu Posted April 26 I have taken the liberty to compile a patch for this that adds the missing DOOM 1 songs for maps 15, 16, 19, 27 and 29, and also restores the regular DOOM 2 skies that the maps were originally created with in mind. @Scileboi if you could add this into the main wad that would be great. song_only_music_sky_fix1.zip 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
