[Heretic CP] Heretic Heremembered - recreate Corvus's adventure from memory!

Hello there.

I'm thinking of which map to do.

Right know a little busy on work. I think I will do that on weekend.

The project sounds very fun. And maybe a cursed midi will be a good addition too.

Okay, now it's time to submit my own submission: E5M8, both map and the midi. The zip contains the wad(with the midi), the midi file and the Sekaiju project file.

Some notes, I suppose:

For the map itself:

  • Last time I touched this map was about a decade ago. I can't remember if there was a secret or not, but I thought that it would be more appriopriate for the map to have one nonetheless.
  • I thought about giving the "spider" a head and a butt-sack(I dunno how to call it, the part where he keeps the cobweb juice I suppose? It's almost 5AM dammit!), but due to lack of space I decided not to.
  • I am not sure how many artifacts you had at your disposal, I feel like there might have been only one Invulnerability Ring. Not that it makes much of a difference.
  • The OG map was a BIT exciting back then from what I remember. This one ain't it though. But probably because I've grown as a Doom player.

As for the midi:

  • I haven't listened to a Heretic MIDI in weeks, but I have more or less remembered the lot of them due to exposure over the years.
  • I am a novice user of composing programs, so I frequently ran into an issue of knowing the song in my head and not knowing how to put it into notes.
  • That part that I used the Vibraphone instrument for, I have no idea what it actually is, nothing from the 127 instrument list felt like a precise fit. I picked the least deviating option.
  • This is less to do with me remembering the song and just lack of experience with composing, but I am not certain about the instruments I picked for various parts.
  • The beginning area and the percussion are something I don't quite remember, so I had to improvise.
  • I used Sekaiju with the default windows soundfont. A quick play with the SC55 soundfont seems to sound fine though. Seems like some instruments sound same in the former, yet different in the latter though.
  • Doesn't quite loop properly, if I remove those penises in Sekaiju song view or place any notes to the left of them it all gets turned into piano >:-(. Also, a couple of empty bars at the end, I dunno how to get rid of them.

Tested with DSDA, naturally. Alternate titles for the map are to be determined.

 

I'll get around to playing your submissions later, I promise.

Sorry for the late reply, but I should probably post about the newest submissions. They are all UV-Maxable in DSDA, individual notes below.

I dunno what you did, besides adding an exit. I don't think I ever gave E6 a proper playthrough, but I liked what I saw. If you think you made a mix up with a different map from that episode, whoops!

Map is betable and works properly, so that's nice. I believe you when you say you hardly remember it, but I can tell you played it on Skill 3. Due to the number of Iron Liches. >:-3

Fine job. Would you tell us when was the last time you played this map, or the game at all? Given that this is an opening level, I probably experienced this level more than the others, and well... you turned the docks into a dam/reservoir, there's no window to an outside area(maybe there was a secret exit to it, or maybe it was a different level?), the gauntlets secret doesn't have the black textures, there's no flight of rising wooden stairs, and THERE'S NO SKELETON AT THE END. A properly cursed level, a thum up for you!

By the way, if we are giving maps and midis silly names like the Doom projects, I'd love to have this track called Maruq instead of Marek because... y'know, that's half of my name x)

It seems to be a decent recreation of E2M6's song, but Houston, we have a problem. All the instruments have been turned into piano! A cursory glance at the midi file indicated that this isn't meant to be the case, so can we fix this?

Strange, I've used SC-55 which is general midi. This shouldn't be the problem. I'll look into it.

Edit: Alright I see, seems to be a LMMS problem. For whatever reason it's just merging all the tracks into one track.

Apologies but, it doesn't seem like that I'd be able to deliver. Apparently LMMS botched the project somehow and has a super annoying bug in the MIDI export where it merges all of the tracks into one. Tried for hours yesterday and today and I can't seem to come to a conclusion :/

Well, I just quickly opened the MIDI in Sekaiju. While it's true that the tracks had their output set to Channel 1, the tracks were imported as separate. So I followed the labels and applied the relevant instruments to them. Seems like it's fixed now. Make sure to check the MIDI out yourself to see if it aligns with what you wanted though.

I have an emergency.

My map just died. It became all crusher ceilings for no reason ! One last door just broke it. 9 hours into trash and 1 hour left to submit, What should I do, Everything was perfect until now...

You mean, when you try to test the map in a source port, all the ceilings turn into crushers?

 

Can you submit the WAD, as in the map file here? I think it has to do with Rogue Tag 0, a rookie mistake. I think it's salvageable in that case.

 

But yes, please show what you have so far.

Already asked for help. Problem solved.

Silly nooby me. I used SR instead of standard DR, plus one doubled tag and that what caused an issue. I will double check everything and release the map also will check that everything is in order in Chocolate Heretic.

I remembered most of the main areas, but i didn't remembered how the yellow door and exit expanded, but the rest of the map is def there

UVMaxable in DSDA, therefore I consider it finished. While I don't recall the OG level, it is a bit starved on resources.

Oopsie. Happened while I was checking for mistakes, might have pulled a linedef by accident resulting in texture shift.

I did completed the level myself before sending. In fact, I completed the original map in Black Plague Wand Start. So yeah I pulled up the map from that expierience in mind. It sure has some faulty design compared to original, but resources were sparse in original too and it has to be precise in wand start if you do not want to be slayed quickly. Monster count I think is lesser due to me forgetting the entire post yellow door area.

But I think the bullet hell main area (if not for the looks) and antlion stairs in gameplay matter is quite accurate to the original.

The other fault might be that I never played original in lower difficulties, so difficulty choices might be stiff.

Also, I had NEVER realised how lesser the amount of textures in Heretic and it still looks very diverse.

Interesting, glad to oblige. IIRC Black Plague doubles the ammo given by ammo pickups, just like Doom's Nightmare!, so that's a thing to consider, I suppose.

 

You did remember to NOT check the original map during your creative process, did you?

I'm pretty good person at that.

The only time that happened (accidentally) when I forgot to first save map and only then load the game to check it. So I accidentally seen the main area a little, the start of the level is in the place player starts but it is a Doom 1's E3M1 or Doom 2 MAP07 kinda start that I forgot - the lowering platform after pressing the switch. That's the only detail I spoiled and decided to not change. That I didn't remember that one. The Yellow door is purely imaginery.

At first I THOUGHT there should be either a room with iron liches either a throne room with maulotaur and 4 teleportals. It surely is somewhere in episode three but I realised it doesn't fit the map so that was a fever dream of all Ep. 3 maps. I thought hardly should I try making that or not. Having parts of other maps in different maps is too much cursed I think.

Also, I'm not quite sure about the artifacts. Like yeah the artifacts are there but I do not remember where are which of them is stored in the original, so that was a guess. I clearly remember the Invulnerablity Ring and a Staff in Maulotaur room, and the Crossbow at the start - the rest is (outside of monster or geometry) me trying to remember, or visualise what could be a good reward for each fight.

E2M4 The Frozen Gulch - The Ice Grotto Recreated from memory by me

Checked all the teleporters, doors - twice in DSDA.

Monster count is high, but this time around I did not forgot about ammunition and starter weapons - there are plently of them

Secret exit is there and accessible.

I think the hardest part for me was the buildings inside the citadel.

I clearly remember the dark one with a button but the rest... Uh let's say it's a fantasy rather than a memory.

I don't remember how the secret or main exit rooms looked like and how and where they should be placed, so that is also somewhat messed up.

I don't think player had an access to the higher level of the stronghold except for watchtower. but I though it be cool.

Tell me if there's something wrong there.

I'll be honest - some textures (mountains mainly) are not exactly all Shift-R'd since Heretic itself not always did that to detailed degree so I did the clearence of textures for places where it would be very noticeable and making them as good looking took much time already.

Map is beatable and enjoyable. Good enough for me. There is only one problem though: the exit sector itself is marked as a secret, which means you cannot obtain the secret without noclipping, so that means you can only have 5/6 secrets.

 

Other than that, the map is considered finished.

Woopsie, how did I managed to do such a 90's mistake lol... Should really be more careful with sector tagging.

Well, no 100% secrets for Big Mac Davis...

Thank you very much. If I will have more time I will think on taking another final one - E2M6. I think this is another "blank" in the mind of many.

It is not critical to have such a mistake, right? I might just make many angry for that speedy mistake. Should we fix the secret or leave it there?

Never thought that anybody would make those two words an abbreviation in such a public place. First CP that come to my mind are horror series Child's Play (yeah, it's similar but not extreme), an actor Chris Pratt and most certainly Community Project
