mrthejoshmon Posted April 12, 2024 (edited) It did have them. And leaderboards too. I can live without achievements but leaderboards were top tier shit, played the hell out of it to see how high I could get. Edited April 12, 2024 by mrthejoshmon 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Kinsie Posted April 12, 2024 Doom's had achievements since 1994. Keep up, slackers. 6 Quote Share this post Link to post
Grain of Salt Posted April 12, 2024 I don't have a reasoned justification for disliking achievements, I just find them annoying. In 20 years they'll add Pepsi Moments™ to the Xbox Wang remake of Doom and it'll happen to you, too. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

OliveTree Posted April 13, 2024 personally i feel like its pretty absurd that they arent carried over to pc. its not that i think they'd add something, it just kinda bothers me to see that lack of parity. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Jakub Majewski Posted April 13, 2024 It already has them... in the BFG edition, but still. (I'm too tired and lazy to see if anyone else in the thread mentioned this already). I could have assumed the Unity port also had them(because the Quake 1/2 remasters did so), but if OP is asking the question, then maybe it isn't the case? And well, I wouldn't mind. Having more challenges for the player to complete is nice. But dear devs, for the love of fuck, please don't add achievements like "meet Garry Newman on a multiplayer server" or "get 100 000 views on YouTube for your replay" while the replay feature's been broken for years. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Maximum Matt Posted April 13, 2024 I like achievements. They should re-jig Vanilla so it counts up your achievement percentages so you know how much of the episode/DoomII you have completed. That would be all cool. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Devalaous Posted April 13, 2024 The best official ones in classic Doom are easily 'You have huge guts' and 'Shoot at it until it dies', references to the Doom Comic and Ling's fake protip respectively. Both involve killing a cyb with puny weaponry too. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Achievements with a capital 'A' are specifically checklist items that are tacked-on. Meaning, the game just tells a separate online platform to check the box... they aren't really part of the game itself, as they are attached to the marketplace. (yeah, it isn't just for your private addiction purposes... it notifies your friends every time You Did Thing... aka poking them to buy Buy BUY) They can be alright if actually creative and not just stuff you are guaranteed to do during normal playthrough anyway. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
ObserverOfTime Posted April 13, 2024 I do not need a pop-up telling me that I just did some sick stunt, I know that fact is true myself and the artificial external validation is at best a minor unnecessary annoyance getting in the way of me performing more sick stunts. I don't think the game would retroactively benefit from it. And besides, Doom already comes with something much better than an achievement system: The ability to record and share your achievements in a way that almost anyone else can see you recreate it exactly the way you did it! Want to share a serious achievement? Post the demo and anyone that cares can have a look! It doesn't get much better than that honestly, I prefer it to browsing a list saying "Username did X, Y & Z". I can load up demos from players that did a thing 20 years ago and marvel at the execution, and that beats looking at a static list. Sure, it requires the most superficial effort compared to scrolling a list but I think the qualitative experience is that much better. Consider the case of the following achievement: "Chopped Glutes: Player killed a Cyberdemon with a chainsaw". Would you rather read that text and move on with your life, or would you rather see the feat for yourself? The one thing an achievement system would have going for it is that it allows you to compare your achievements to those of other players. That point becomes rather moot however when the vast majority of Doom installs are being used to load the IWADs in third-party source ports without any achievements, therefore distorting the actual ratio of the achievements. That being said, if the official Steam / Whatever version of Doom came out with an achievement system tomorrow I wouldn't lose any sleep over it, I'd be happy that an old game got a new feature even if it's not for me, turn off said feature, and move on with my life. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

My old favorite trivia website Sporcle (play my quizzes lol) is a great example of this where there used to be only a very small number of "badges" you could win for doing certain things. Because there were so few, each one really did feel like I was achieving something, even if it was something stupid like playing three Groundhog Day related quizzes on Groundhog Day or whatever. Nowadays, there's so many fucking badges and levels of badges that I swear I get one like every two quizzes I play. They're not achievements anymore, they're a damned nuisance and I don't give a shit when I see them anymore. In terms of in-game achievements like what Steam and XBox and stuff do, I guess I also don't like the way that they pop up during gameplay. I like the feeling of getting immersed in the game world, of forgetting that I'm playing a game and that any real world exists outside of it, and when I hear a blippy noise and see some shiny out-of-place trinket pop up it takes me out of that. Expand I think there's a way to disable that. Try disabling Steam in-game overlay, see if that does it. Or some option in settings for notifications. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
