plantka Posted April 16, 2024 hey i am wondering if there any ways to make gzdoom(and zdoom) feel more like classic doom i like the ways gzdoom(and zdoom) spice up doom by making it more reminiscent to modern shooters but i would also like it to play more like classic doom then modern first person shooters you could play classic doom throw steam just disable crossfire and you could play the game on dosbox but at times i wanna run doom on gzdoom and just it being the classic with classic controls only difference being graphics i would love hear your feedback thank you, 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Shepardus Posted April 17, 2024 (edited) A little punctuation would go a long way in making your post easier to understand. I was about to write something about making GZDoom look closer to vanilla Doom, but then I noticed that you said: 41 minutes ago, plantka said: i wanna run doom on gzdoom and just it being the classic with classic controls only difference being graphics So it sounds like tuning the graphics isn't what you want, but rather you want "classic controls," whatever that means. Doom supported rebinding keys and using the mouse to look around (left/right, not up/down) from day 1, so if you were under the impression that keyboard-only with default controls is what defines "classic," think again. Even in 1993 you could have played Doom using mostly the same controls you would use for a modern FPS (though it would be a while before people really standardized on that). The main things in GZDoom that are definitely not "classic" are jumping, crouching, and freelook (looking up/down), so you can unbind the jump/crouch buttons in the controls menus and turn off "always mouselook" in the mouse options. Autoaim should be set to the maximum 35 in the player options, but that's the default anyway. Arguably you should have vertical mouse movement enabled (forward/backward speed in mouse options) so that moving the mouse up/down will move the player forward/backward, but even on DOS people had ways around that. Also, it's not really "controls," but things like infinitely tall actors and janky hit detection definitely affect how the game handles, so setting the compatibility mode to "Doom (strict)" would give a more "classic" feel. TheHambourgeois Posted April 17, 2024 Unless you are playing GZDoom requiring wads, you can also look at other engines which use GL or other hardware rendering but have a lot more vanilla compatibility in terms of demo recording, etc,. which could include everything from DSDA-Doom to Eternity. Otherwise, I think setting a lot of the compatibility flags backward, turning off mouselook, and turning on autoaim are the way to go 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
TF_Doomer Posted April 18, 2024 (edited) Honestly if you want a classic experience and don’t won’t be hassle of dos box or don’t want to play the steam ports (who can blame ya I only have it for the Iwads and to download source ports easier and it was on sale so…) you might like Crispy or Chocolate Doom! They still keep the vanilla feel and are vanilla compatible! Albeit I don’t have them on my PC because I play with GZ Doom cause freelook. So I don’t know about the graphical end of the spectrum but besides source ports are easy to download but if you really want to stick with GZ Doom I think you should take into account what Shepardus said. 8088mph Posted April 18, 2024 if you're just looking for improved graphics without all those special effects like ambient occlusion, the best way to go is with a newer pr-boom derivative (woof, dsda, and their own derivatives.) these ports allow you to scale the resolution high up while still maintaining compatibility with classic doom and boom wads. if you just want classic controls, then look at what shepardus said. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
