Sydney knife attacking spree

Recommended Posts

On Saturday at the start of school holidays, someone went into a mall in Sydney (Not the Canadian Sydney) with a knife and killed six people, injuring about the same.  Five out of the six killed were women, people are suggesting they were an incel.  He ended up getting shot by an off-duty cop.  This was covered and treated here a lot like a high-tier (wrong word?) mass shooting in the u.s.  A French guy held him off of ascending an escalator by brandishing a bollard at him, and he's been offered permanent residency for his heroism.  It's funny that I mentioned to someone that there probably will be a copycat attack, and that it was ruled out as a terrorism incident, as on monday an Islamic extremist stabbed a minister at an Assyrian church, which was regarded as a terrorism incident (I guess it doesn't have to have a high number of fatalities to be called such?)

Anyway this is my attempt to contribute to the everything else forum.  People appear to post about incidents in their country on here rather than a status update if they're quite serious incidents.  In my state we actually aren't allowed to carry any sort of knife unless we've bought it and are taking it home, or have a valid reason (Fishing, use for your occupation etc).  I guess I'm after thoughts on the latter more than the former?

The first time I heard about that second attack I knew it wasn't random and that priest was specifically targeted. So it's not really a copycat attack. Different offenders with different motivations attacking different victims.

I mean, the Assyrian church attack was technically terrorism in that it was a public act of violence that was ideologically motivated, but the vibe I get from it personally was... you know those stories where dumb internet drama escalates into real life violence?  I suppose it doesn't help that on one side was a hate preacher who literally wanted to martyr himself and the other was a Jr. Islamist so stupid he ended up cutting off his own finger during the attack, but if you where to point to this as example of an organized existential threat to Australia's way of life™ I would feel as secure as a snag in some hastily buttered white bread out the front of bunnings. Honestly the 'riot' imminently afterword probably spooked your average dinky-di ozzy more then the attack it's self. Despite being prison a colony for a while Australia is extremely cop pilled and they don't like it when you do rowdy civil disobedience like that.

As for the first guy, all we know for sure was that he was homeless, schizophrenic and off his meds.
Apparently he was from Toowoomba, and if the dates are right, we would have been in high school at about the same time, so I'll just say while we don't know his motives, if it did turn out that they where misogynistic in nature, growing up there wouldn't have helped :/

i saw this on the local south australian news a few days ago, my mum thought he was an arab at first and went on a little rant on how we're letting in too many arabs and asians, we also saw on a separate news report that they did a background check on the dude and if i recall correctly apparently he was in some kind of gun club or had a interest in guns or something, might have gotten something wrong here but it's a horrible situation regardless

An extremely awful situation. I made the mistake of looking at the local news (only for the purpose of staying informed on the attacks) and saw comments from people saying the events were "false flags" and that the people fleeing in the videos were "crisis actors". I didn't expect to see so much evil and overwhelming stupidity here in Australia.

I uh, don't know what the Australian Illuminati would get out of faking a couple of knife attacks as you're already not allowed to carry them for self defense purposes.

oh, mass shootings here barely get a mention these days. otherwise they'd all take up the whole 20 minutes.

Didn't Australia basically make lawful gun ownership nearly impossible after a mass shooting 20 years or so back?

Media needs to drive their profits through viewership and clicks, these kinds of incidents generate revenue. Unfortunate side effects may include people wanting to get on the news to be talked about and others copying the attacks.

Purely speculation but I feel like if someone is committed enough to want to actually kill you with a knife, you having one is not going to change that. Best thing to do against a knife wielder is run. Saving yourself with a knife in a knife fight would be pure luck.

Honestly mace and/or a stun gun would be more likely to save your ass than a knife of your own.

I've seen a few videos of stun guns failing or not working when needed. Also, you have to account for thick clothing and having to in deadly close range with the suspect. Mace or pepper spray is 100% the way to go in my opinion, will completely inhibit most people.

The best example I can think of is when a person used pepper spray to stop the Seattle Pacific University shooting.

The first attack has been proven to be a case of incel violence, I hate how often dirty fucking incels do these things.

Didn't really mention it regarding self-defence, just, afaik most of the world don't have such tight restrictions on knives.  I lost a boxcutter one time, airport security found it for me.  If I were searched in the street(And I have been once, seemed to be completely random) I would have been in trouble.  And there are plenty of sharp things people could carry around to commit crime without it being a knife.  More humorously, a local kid tried to hold up a liquor store with a butter knife and the staff member just laughed.

The Port Author Massacre resulted in a ban on semi automatic rifles. You can still own guns for Hunting and Sport shooting with the proper licensing, but you can't own one for 'self defense'.

Gel blasters (What kids use in the u.s if they're deemed too young for airsoft) are banned in most of Australia.  The argument is that replicas could be used to commit crime - sure, it could scare people, but when the police claim they can't tell the difference between one and a real gun - it would be almost impossible for anyone outside a biker gang to get hold of one.  If there's an AR-15 or glock out in public, it basically means it has found its' way out of a police armoury.  Most gun crime is committed with a manual shotgun or manual rifle, because that's all that most of the public are allowed to have.  The public don't know better but the police do when they say "We're banning gel blasters because one day we'll end up shooting someone because we can't tell their high-power automatic rifle isn't real".

Often restrictions are put in place to shield the state from litigation and to avoid precedents being set regarding self defense. States want to reserve a monopoly on legal violence no matter what even at the cost of their own citizens. It also helps prevent rules-lawyering from people who twist interpretations of laws in order to justify usually unjustifiable actions.

Most Australians believe you can't sue the government and win.  Also we only just started getting "no win no fee" ads from lawyers and only just started to be encouraged to sue someone for suffering during/after an accident or such.  You know that guy on king of the hill that slipped on "pee-pee" in costco and got a $50,000 settlement?  Never heard of that happening here.  Out of curiosity, when I slipped at a supermarket and was later unable to get out of a train seat because of it, a lawyer told me that only my medical bills and medication would be covered - which came to the grand total of about $5 due to the public health system and subsidised meds.  The train company called an ambulance and one of the drivers got really mad at me because they were diverted away from someone committing suicide.  I just said I had no say in making the call.

Where you got 'proven' from? I've yet to see anything from any news outlet so far.
