WoofDg79 Posted April 20 What's up, folks?! I have a question for the masses. And it may be a silly one lol. I enjoy watching others play DooM, and it has me thinking about recording some of my own gameplay. Just doing like blind runs of whatever wad to see how I fare against things the first time around. Anyway, just about everyone I watch uses the classic no-vert look w/ vert auto-aim. I do enjoy that but I must admit I personally like playing with freelook and zero auto-aim, usually on GzDoom with a lean toward the classic feel visually but allowing things like full color. I gotta imagine people like yourselves will be the ones "maybe" viewing my gameplay if I were upload it. Is it pretty much expected I'd have to play classic style, or would anyone still be possibly interested if I'm using freelook lol? TL;DR: Is freelook zero auto-aim too blasphemous to be witnessed in gameplay recordings? :p 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gothic Posted April 20 Depends if you're testing or giving criticism. If you're playing casual then who cares, but if you're making a review and say "this map is too easy, just shoot this switch here and exit lol" then people will call you out on it. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
WoofDg79 Posted April 20 That makes sense! Fot me I would just be playing casually, checking out levels to check them out, have fun, and play some DooM. If I were going to critique or review a level then I'd want to make sure to play it as its .txt file suggests 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Lucius Wooding Posted April 20 Freelook should only be used to tie Doomguy's shoes. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Tompig Posted April 20 SiN was a good game, a shame it never got a true sequel. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

Luckily, (I can't remember if it's an actual rule) mappers state in their txts if crouching, freelook, and/or jump breaks the map/playability anywhere. So, that's a good thing to keep in mind. Also, as someone who is (tries) in the same boat, I suggest you to experiment a lot with your recording software (like OBS, in my case) in 5min test videos to consider file sizes/quality before going for longer recordings. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I just bought it because the discount was so bonkers I felt like my wishlist came true at last. Now back to OP's topic. If it ain't game-breaking, freelook is okay. Trigsy Posted April 23 I say it's acceptable. Part of that is that I like to play the same way, with free look and no auto aim, but mostly... DOOM is DOOM. Doomkid points this out in his video about what "vanilla DOOM" is. The way you play is valid regardless of what anyone thinks, because DOOM is DOOM. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
DavidN Posted April 23 It’s sometimes difficult to tell because there are so many different compatibility concerns with GZDoom - was I meant to be able to shoot that switch from here? Can I walk on top of these barrels or were they meant to be a barrier? Did the author mean to allow jumps or are they using a format that assumes they don’t exist? Check the readme for the WADs you download to make sure you’re not missing out on things due to these differences, but it’s really about your own enjoyment. If anyone tells me how to play Doom (except in cases where I really did trivialize the level by making a mistake) I tell them to get lost! Recognize when people should be minding their own business - the weirdest comment I ever got was from someone who just said “I have never felt the need to have damage numbers appear on the screen when I play Doom”. Okay, don’t download and run m8f’s damnums mod then, what do you want me to do about it 6 Quote Share this post Link to post
CBM Posted April 23 I would say freelook is fine unless it breaks the map/mod and the map/mod author therefore informs people about that in a readme or similar 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

ᒐack102 Posted April 24 I feel like there is ONE exception to the rule: the Icon of Sin. To get the actual experience of the fight, you mostly need locked look. Though I wouldn't blame for freelook AFTER beating it with lock look. Again, wierd excepetion, but it's there. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
fruity lerlups Posted April 24 as always, play as the mappers intended, thats the ultimate rule, did the map intend for you to jump? what about infinitely tall monsters, etc. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
GrayFace Posted April 24 Just make sure secrets are either marked by time codes or chapters or secret counter is always on the screen. That's what I'm looking for when searching for gameplay of maps. As for mouse look, I guess you might get a few people being annoying in comments from time to time because of it, but that's about it. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
