Helton342 Posted April 21 Any improvements that can be added to Doom 64 For Vanilla made by Doomkid? As in more atmosphere, better models for non-doom 64 enemies, better animation, upscaling and that sort of stuff. Things like the Jovian Palette for example So far, i've only done the following with it are: Doom 64 For Doom 2 Doom 64 Skin Dr PySpy's Doom 64 Archvile 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Metal_Slayer Posted April 22 These are good combinations but I think you can't go much beyond that in Vanilla, in limit removing ports you could add higher quality sound samples and frames of animation. But things like echoing sounds and colored lighting only are supported by a few engines. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Better atmosphere is a subjective term, but for example, you can't have colored lighting - vanilla doesn't support it, nor fog effects, or things of an advanced nature like that. Better models for non-Doom 64 enemies isn't even in the scope of Doom 64 for Vanilla, so I'm not really sure what you're after here. Better animation *IS* possible... to a point. The catch is you would have to take frames from something else and do some Dehacked wizardry to make it happen. For every frame you give something, something else has to lose it - and there's only so much frames you can get that way. There's no way to add frames without losing vanilla compatibility. Upscaling is literally not even possible in the Vanilla engine. Doom was made to run at 320x200, so it's also kind of a pointless thing to do. Shepardus Posted April 22 (edited) Doom CE has sprites for the enemies that aren't present in Doom 64 (some videos here), might be nice to include those with d64-gfx.wad instead of using the Mother Demon as the arch-vile. (Edit: The Doom CE arch-vile is in fact the one by DrPyspy that OP linked.) Edited April 22 by Shepardus 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Immorpher Posted April 22 As prior mentioned, I guess some of it depends if you would like to break some vanilla limits or not. But there's a lot of gameplay mods with various bells and whistles. The upcoming Unseen Evil by DrPyspy probably will be the best in recreating the Doom 64 atmosphere, but it requires GZDoom or VKDoom (far away from vanilla as possible). Here are a list of various gameplay mods which have a lot in them! https://www.doom64.com/engines/gamemods.html 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Helton342 Posted April 23 Thank you all for your generous insight! Whatever Zandronum can handle without crashing or losing sprite quality would be nice. 18 hours ago, Immorpher said: As prior mentioned, I guess some of it depends if you would like to break some vanilla limits or not. Since im trying to play this with others rather than just with myself (Suprisingly easy to set up for solo play) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Look at the "Engine" column, and anything that lists Zandronum / ZDoom / Doom (General Engines) should be good. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
