OpenRift Posted April 24 (edited) Ignore this post, I misread something and did a big dumb Spoiler So for the longest time, I thought the only differences between the Doom 3 BFG Edition version and Unity Port versions of No Rest for the Living were purely cosmetic (new TITLEPIC, INTERPIC, and a different sky texture for maps 04-08). But after discovering a ZDoom forums thread (linked by @june gloom in another thread) that talked about changes in actual item placement and level geometry in the Unity versions, it got me thinking about which version of NERVE.WAD is "canonical." When I say "canonical" I kind of mean like, the definitive version, in the same way that the Ultimate Doom 1.9 and Doom II 1.9 IWADs are the definitive versions of those games. Would the Unity version be that definitive version? Or would it be the BFG Edition version? Or better yet, is the XBLA version any different than the BFG Edition version? Would that be the canonical version? Which version is used for speedrunning? Or is it more of a Final Doom id Anthology sort of situation where it's kind of like, really ambiguous and nobody's really sure? Yes, I know the differences between the versions are practically miniscule and I'm splitting hairs over basically nothing, but like, of course I am, and I wanna hear what you guys think anyway. june gloom Posted April 24 The obvious answer to me is the XBLA/BFG one. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

You might want to actually read that again. They are talking about Sigil in regards to differences. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

They're the same according to the Doom Wiki. 11 minutes ago, OpenRift said: Which version is used for speedrunning? The XBLA/BFG Edition WAD, though you'll also see runs done on a patched version that moves the levels to start on MAP12 so the secret level could be played in the right order before source ports had implemented support for NRftL (and before UMAPINFO was a thing). 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

SiFi270 Posted April 24 This reminds me of how the achievement names in the XBLA version of Doom 2 imply a "story" for No Rest that just doesn't hold up for a moment. Beating the main game gets you an achievement called "From Earth to Hell..." which is accurate enough, but then the one for No Rest is called "...And Back Again," which suggests it's about Doomguy going home after beating the Icon of Sin. Except the first level is clearly called "The Earth Base," and it follows the usual "more hellish the deeper you go" kind of progression even before sponge corrected the skies in later versions. wooo pedantry 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
