DRON12261 Posted April 25 Every mapper who mapped for vanilla must have any DOSBOX close at hand. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Mordeth Posted April 25 I'm running Dosbox regulary for ancient (doom) tools I'm still using. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
MAN_WITH_GUN Posted April 25 I prefer playing 90's and early 2000's wads in DOSBox. And especially i like the original look and gameplay of the game, even though i started with more modern ports. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
ZeroTheEro Posted April 25 just so I could hear the demo loop of the v1.666 with pc speakers. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
.zwxn Posted April 25 You can get DOOM running in DOSBox through Retroarch with CRT shaders for some interesting results... It definitely can't replace an actual CRT, but it looks pretty cool, and I imagine someone who knows what they're doing with the shaders settings (which I don't :P) could make it look even better and more accurate. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

ShaderGlass isn't half bad as well. You can even run multiple shaders with it combined with ReShade! 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
dasho Posted April 25 Everyone wants to talk about CRT scanlines but nobody wants to emulate hitting the degauss button on your monitor. 10 Quote Share this post Link to post

This is the only way I can play Doom in 320x200, with a CRT or a shader, the other way pixels are too large. With the same CRT pattern 640x400 could look like Full HD on my old monitor. Long live CRT. Well, here's how I play it if it's not DosBox (PCem shaders). If it comes to DosBox, then DosBox SVN Retro (Optionals v23) with lottes CRT is also something I really like, with a slight modification that makes it brighter. Really cool little program, It seems way more practical than something like ReShade. Thanks for the recommendation! 1 hour ago, Darkcrafter07 said: This is the only way I can play Doom in 320x200, with a CRT or a shader, the other way pixels are too large. I gave it a try with your modded version of CRT Lottes and it looks great, definitely helps interpolate the pixels, which improves how jarring the original 320x200 can look on modern displays. Murdoch Posted April 25 Rarely, though still for the odd vintage game with no modern port, and rarer still for FPS games. My eyes cannot handle 320x200 super fast action on a 28-inch screen for very long. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Is mainline DOSBox officially abandoned now, or is it just still in that weird limbo where the lead dev refuses to make a proper new release but still gets super salty about people saying the project is dead? 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Yousuf Anik Posted April 27 Yes I do. I now play Quake in DosBox. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Drago Posted April 28 (edited) I used to when I started playing around 2020, becuase i just didnt like the unity version (maybe it was just the obnoxious intro). But then I found out that, big shock, the game that has famously been ported to everything from pregnancy tests to calculators also has plenty of great community made 64 bit windows ports. Edited April 28 by Drago spelling lmao 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
MisterLivers Posted April 29 I only use dosbox from time to time, but not for doom, my main source port is GZDoom, for obvious reasons 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
vanilla_d00m Posted April 30 I’m using it again, i feel smart when I use it. Dosbox 0.61 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Darkcrafter07 Posted April 30 It's a bit offtop but DosBox can be used sometimes to pull out MIDIs out of old games by recording either MPU or DRO commands but v0.65 works the best for such purposes. Some adlib tracker songs may also be transcribed this way. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
