I prefer playing 90's and early 2000's wads in DOSBox. And especially i like the original look and gameplay of the game, even though i started with more modern ports.

You can get DOOM running in DOSBox through Retroarch with CRT shaders for some interesting results... novert-240123-044459.png.22e4210d64bd550f0ce8dd569e23e638.png

It definitely can't replace an actual CRT, but it looks pretty cool, and I imagine someone who knows what they're doing with the shaders settings (which I don't :P) could make it look even better and more accurate.

ShaderGlass isn't half bad as well. You can even run multiple shaders with it combined with ReShade!

Everyone wants to talk about CRT scanlines but nobody wants to emulate hitting the degauss button on your monitor.

This is the only way I can play Doom in 320x200, with a CRT or a shader, the other way pixels are too large. With the same CRT pattern 640x400 could look like Full HD on my old monitor. Long live CRT. Well, here's how I play it if it's not DosBox (PCem shaders).

If it comes to DosBox, then DosBox SVN Retro (Optionals v23) with lottes CRT is also something I really like, with a slight modification that makes it brighter.

Really cool little program, It seems way more practical than something like ReShade. Thanks for the recommendation!

I gave it a try with your modded version of CRT Lottes and it looks great, definitely helps interpolate the pixels, which improves how jarring the original 320x200 can look on modern displays. Thanks for sharing!

Rarely, though still for the odd vintage game with no modern port, and rarer still for FPS games. My eyes cannot handle 320x200 super fast action on a 28-inch screen for very long.

Dosbox has been abandoned so I recommend using its successors instead. Dosbox-staging or dosbox-x.

Is mainline DOSBox officially abandoned now, or is it just still in that weird limbo where the lead dev refuses to make a proper new release but still gets super salty about people saying the project is dead?

If you want to answer to that question, you can create an account on https://www.vogons.org/index.php and ask them yourself.  That's where they hang out.

I used to when I started playing around 2020, becuase i just didnt like the unity version (maybe it was just the obnoxious intro). But then I found out that, big shock, the game that has famously been ported to everything from pregnancy tests to calculators also has plenty of great community made 64 bit windows ports.

It's a bit offtop but DosBox can be used sometimes to pull out MIDIs out of old games by recording either MPU or DRO commands but v0.65 works the best for such purposes. Some adlib tracker songs may also be transcribed this way.
