The Doom Game We Never Got (Sort Of)

Recommended Posts

In this video, I wanted to take a look at Tom Hall's Doom Bible and see how different the game might have been if it had been implemented. And then I wanted to show a few games that did bring Hall's visions to life after all...

This topic is probably an old hat for some, but not for me. I never found the time to read the Bible and I certainly never had this much experience with Doom in general. I'd really like to hear what you guys think. Would it have made for a good game, or was it better they scrapped it?

I'd like to one day make a map edit of e1m8 that adds Buddy (in the form of an ally marine courtesy of realm 667) and have him be what the Bruiser Brothers target at first

I think a lot of the ideas were neat, but I prefer what the end result was. It’s just like how I feel about Wolf 3D. Yes, it would be cool to see whatever early builds that had the stealth stuff still intact (and the removed weapon too!), but Id wanted to make a game that was action packed, fast on slow computers, etc. I think they basically did the same with Doom, they dropped features over time that weren’t really necessary for their overall goals for the game’s success.

Also @GermanPeter I suggest you look into the Duke 3D and Shadow Warrior development sometime. I think you could find tons of material to cover on your channel!

Yeah, the stealth mechanics of Wolfenstein were removed for a reason. I'll be honest, I've never liked stealth in any of the Wolfenstein games. It feels barebones and gimmicky at best (MachineGames) and downright frustrating at worst (RTCW). Shooting will always be way more fun.

I might look into Duke 3D, but I don't really have a strong feeling for that game. I'll keep it in mind, though! If anything, I'd talk about Duke Nukem Forever, the 2D game that got turned into a different game entirely.

A video that debunks the myth that Duke Nukem Forever became Alien Rampage would be great.

I disagree with Carmack's "Story in a video game is like the story in porn" quote but I feel like in this case, the story would need a change to be good.

Multiple characters would be an elegant concept tho imo and would make Doom even a bigger hit.

Aren't those some of the most favorite punching bags for the community?

By "some of the most favorite punching bags for the community", you mean "nearly nobody gives two hoots about or even is aware of them"?

I'm so glad neither of those ever got realized. Even Doom 2016 came dangerously close to being a generic military shooter at times (like the cover), but going the exact opposite direction and leaning more into the classic gameplay was the way to go.

And we all see how Croteam's idea ended up being, with Serious Sam 3: BFE. Not a terrible game, but definitely lacks the charm of the previous ones. It'd have likely killed the Doom franchise if they had gone through with it.
