What will the doom community look like 30 years from now?

Recommended Posts

I chose that specific time frame because i think that's when most of the people who grew up with the classic doom games(kids/teens in the 90's) would be in their 60's or 70's, do ya'll think you'll still be even playing this game in your golden years?

good god, imagine the fuckin LAN parties and epic PC setups in the retirement home just so you and your fellow aging marines keeping "Dooming" on.

And what about this place?, this site might become the biggest online congregation of seniors outside of facebook

It'd be amazing if it stuck around, if the entire earth isn't in a full-blown nuclear fallout then I'm sure there would still be a community. Games like Space Invaders still have cult-like followings after 50 years of existence, I'd imagine Doom would be similar, if not more alive just by observing it's current status.

As for Doomworld becoming a hub for seniors... we're already inching there. Crazy to think it's been 30 years since its release.

The Doom community seems to keep getting influxes of younger players and creators, so hopefully it will keep growing in the future and not die out with the current generation.

The idea of the community still being around 30 years from now makes me smile. Maybe it's naive to believe it will soldier on for that long, but then again, Doom and its community are resilient. it's gone through its share of dry spells, heck we didn't get a mainline game for well over a decade at one point. Even now people find their way back to it after a long time away, and some are still finding it for the first time.

I think as long as Doom carries on as a franchise, the community will as well. it'll probably have dips in activity like it historically has, but I think it will always exist in some way.

Doom is a fascinating canvas, one that has never been easier to get started with than right now. It's also reigned in with just the right amount of limitations, that it requires some sort of creative problem-solving to work around them. That mix of accessibility and necessary ingenuity is a powerful siren's song, and I think as long as there are people making cool things in Doom, it will always inspire others to give it a go.

I think it’ll still be thriving 30 years from now. In fact, I feel there will be many things to come in 30 years that many of us would never imagined possible as of now. I’ve already seen this happen within this community a few times throughout the decades. Not just WADs, but source ports and utilities as well. As time goes on younger people here now gain new skills as they mature, which could lend themselves to bettering the future of this community at a later date in time.

Sadly, the passage of time also means regulars start to fade away, again something anyone who’s been around it long enough is already familiar with, people will come and go, some will go forever for many reasons. That’s a part of life.

As for the channels of communication and file sharing, there will always be new platforms, platforms that come and go, and the ones that have been there since basically the beginning. So I don’t think that’ll ever be a problem of sharing files and communicating regardless of how the internet looks in the future.

If the longevity of this community thus far is anything to go by, even in a post apocalyptic world I think there’d still be WADs being made and shared.

It'll definitely be around, but we might not like it.

In the hands of a younger generation it will morph into something new, free of historical zeitgeist and speaking a new design language we can't comprehend with just bits of our time poking through like how the save icon is still a floppy disk to this day.

I just hope there'll be a society in which the Doom community can exist 30 years from now.

In 30 years  the community will be a bunch of old guys swapping theories about a lore, that never existed in the first place, while playing the game with freelook and jumping which didn't exists in the original release either.

The knowledge of what Doom was, how it looked, felt and played is already fading, as players join, who often weren't even born when Doom was released, and grow up with modern source ports and a lot of mods, which change the way the game works. On one hand that's sad, but on the other hand that's one of the reasons this game won't die.

I like to take a more positive spin on the future now that we have updated similar models of all the classic Doom monsters thanks to 2016 and eternal I could easily see more current WADs being made under the 2016 or Eternal Banner we have two different sets of the monsters to base off of and they're increased Mobility lethality pack mentality and ability to interact with environments could make for some unbelievable Wads in the future if you're not familiar with the updated monsters and their mechanics my UV Max walkthrough series attached below showcases basic monsters shotgun soldiers and imps in the new format and how chaotic and energetic the combat is now imagine us creating our own custom levels and worlds with these monsters could be huge going forward.

Add a bazillion more enemies quicker reaction speeds better music and ambushes and I feel there would be a chance for Doom 3 LOL 2016 and eternal just eat it for breakfast

it's already an overlapping system of communities with totally different takes on how Doom should be, so hopefully we get more camps with progressively more iconoclastic temperaments! i don't think it can really ever die out, there'll always at least be curious revivalists even if everyone current stops recording demos and puts their pens down

One of the largest struggles I have seen starting posting content online is getting consistent views that's why I've altered the variety of the walkthroughs I put out I'm currently running classic Doom doom 2 and doom 2016 UV Max walkthroughs just so there's something for everyone because I also feel that divide it seems like people are either stuck on the classics Doom 2 and it's millions of wad files or some have embraced the newer fast-paced gameplay of 2016 and eternal in for almost 20 years I was a strict Doom 2 wad apologist because if there's anything this community can agree on it's Doom 3 almost destroyed everything but I did try 2016 and I am 100% hopeful if they keep this direction of Doom it will stay big going forward

I hope I will be alive by this time, hope this community will not die as well as my interest in this gorgeous game!

Though, I believe, things will be different after 30 years... like between 1990s and 2020s.

Hopefully by then we'll have found a better term than "Boomer Shooter"

Short of what MFG38 hinted at, I can't see it fading away at any point. Eventually, much of the 'old guard' will retire and/or die then new people will rise to take their place. Doom's community is self-sustaining enough that it'll never die out, even if Doomworld somehow went offline in the future. There's nothing to worry about in that aspect!

I'm sure he was referring to the Doom 3 era.

I don't know who coined this (could be either Kirk Plays or Zlimbratski), but I prefer the term "neoclassical FPS".
