American alternative rock is so indebted to him it is impossible to imagine how it would have gone without his perpetually renegade presence. The bands he fronted advanced and evolved a deeply original sound, and he was constantly furthering his work through incorporating the innovations of who he'd influenced, his own atypical spin always evident. He had so much still to give and it's deeply saddening he's been taken from us so soon, hearing this has been utterly devastating
