What is this?

Finer Doom: The Nominal Touches is a community project originally hosted by Codename_Delta. After receiving the news that they had left the Doomworld community as a whole, I decided to step up to continue and finish the project, so as to not have other people's works go down the drain. As this is (technically) my first hosted community project, I will gladly accept anybody who would like to offer quality assurance and assistance in further project organization.

The premise of this project is simple: The Nominal Touches is a community project consisting of 32 limit-removing maps in(spired by) TNT's style of mapping, with an emphasis placed on smaller details (i.e environmental story-telling, doomcute, etc.) All who are interested are encouraged to join, regardless of skill level. Maps should not be too big or long to play, around 5-10 minutes for early-game maps and 15-20 for the later/end-game maps. These time limits are not too strict, it's mainly here as a point of reference -- in the final compilation, maps may be shifted around slightly depending on their difficulty and length. The themes of each map should ideally follow the themes of the original TNT episodes. Think of it as "TNT, but made with modern tools!"

Below is an up to date list on what slots are taken and what maps still have yet to be claimed. As of 06/16/2024, we have 21 maps submitted, 5 maps unclaimed, and 5 which are confirmed to be works in progress.

  • Maps are to be designed with -complevel 4 in mind. Do not use any Boom specials (Boom conveyers, colored lighting, etc.)
    • With this in mind, PLEASE test your maps in Crispy Doom or DSDA-Doom. We will be checking for any "ZDoom-isms" (such as 0-tagged doors and the like).
  • Newcomers to the project are limited to two map submissions. This may loosen up at a later date.
  • Custom MIDIs are allowed
  • Use TNT.wad as your main IWAD.
  • New textures are to be implemented only by patching them together in the TEXTURE1 lump.
  • Custom graphics (for M_DOOM, TITLEPIC, etc.) are more than welcome!
  • Criticisms that are shared in this thread are to be as respectful as possible -- don't sugarcoat when you think something can be improved, but don't be condescending!
  • Edits of any levels are to be done with the permission of the original mapper.
  • The new deadline for this project will be January 1, 2025, with a QA / playtesting period / release to come shortly after, if all goes to plan.

I withdraw my claim from this project (I think I did, back in the day), sadly I have no time for anything Doom-related these days (I'm still finishing my own works). Apologize in advance. Hope for this project to be finished soon, cheers!.

I'm almost tempted to redo my maps for this because they were some of my first and they are pretty rough imo compared to what I can make now.  But I have limited time and a lot of doom projects on my plate lol

In the older thread, Li'l Devil gave us the news that he left the DW community quietly, and wanted to apologize for abandoning the project, saying it was up for grabs. I think he had some issues within the community, but that's not really in my place to speculate. I'd like to wish him the best of luck in future endeavors!

Completely understandable. If anything, putting them up for reworking is more than valid. I have a feeling a lot of the stuff that's already been submitted will need some reworks.

Good to see this project alive again. I'll have some minor revisions to map 24 up soon. If we end up needing more maps, I wouldn't mind taking one more.

Since DW's tagging seems to have failed me in the OP, I suppose I'll take the time to ask here:

I'm still interested in developing MAP28, it sucks that I'm very on and off about developing maps, since I have a lot of cool ideas simmering in my mind.

Thought I'd give a small update and give some "proof of doing" on my part -- work has been keeping my hands pretty full lately, but I've started with a pretty rough idea for my Map16 entry. This is by no means final, but it's enough for me to already have an idea of where I want to take this map!

Made some progress on my map. It will be centered around teleporting and telefraging.

Well i stay in project. I have new, Fresh idea for Map29 which will avoid mistakies of "orginal" version i made like ugly caves or unfair monster fights. I don't promise it will be 100% in everything perfect but at least i will try again. So i stay in project.

That's a great map! It's amazing you managed to fit so many doom-cute instances and extensive texturing into such a small map while making those elements not obstructive. Combat is quite thoughtful too, despite low monster count; IMHO, the map feels kind of empty, so you can probably sprinkle some low-tier monsters here and there. In any case, that's definitely a worthy submission!
