idbeholdME Posted May 21 (edited) Start with reducing your load count. Spam saves all you want, losing progress always sucks, but start by learning to "play till I die". Only then load a save and try again. Even if you lose 300% armor/health in a fight, save to a different slot and keep going. Making 50 saves a minute doesn't matter if you manage to not obsessively load them all the time. Next step would be to start avoiding saves mid-fights. Try to beat them as a complete scenario, not every shot, enemy kill etc. The game is much more fun when you actually have to manage and utilize the resources on a map. Once you manage those 2 things, you're all set. Edited May 21 by idbeholdME 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Trigsy Posted May 21 Remove the keybind for quick save/load. Save and load using the pause menu. It'll slow you down enough to think twice. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

The reason I dont really enjoy doom is that I save scum too much and if I take even 1 dmg I load my save to try to take no damage. So how do I get out of that bad habit? The problem isn't the saves, is you not wanting to take damage. Think about it. Edit. Not saving/loading will solve the symptom, but not the cause. TheHambourgeois Posted May 22 Drop a difficulty level and play some easier mapsets, then ramp up the difficulty again. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Eurisko Posted May 22 (edited) Someone say Save Scummer? Save scumming is like junk food, you know shouldn’t really do it but you can and you do. It’s the Doom flavoured cheese burger. Safe and comforting. Edited May 22 by Eurisko 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
kalensar Posted May 22 2nd post, but meh. Like somebody else mentioned: Mods. Thats most the reason mods exist on Doom is to replay something in a different style. Thats half the reason I build mods for myself( and share with others) is for that need of different gameplay style on maps that work well for the mod style. Just using something as simple as SmoothDoom, or in my case Code Zleek Doom, can revitalize Doom 1 Episode 1. Brutal FreeDoom works almost with everything. Heck I think the first time I beat Doom 1 Episode 4 I was using Metroid Dreadnought. Another one I took a spin with for replaying lots of replays on wads was the Metal Ops weapons mod because its definitely not Vanilla styled by any stretch but its very well balanced for vanilla monsters. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Zerofuchs Posted May 22 You sure it's not just UV fatigue? I dunno if you're the same but sometimes I find Doom frustrates me because I've been too proud to drop off the difficulty, even though literally nobody is watching or would know (or factually speaking, care lol). Sometimes one wants a challenge, sometimes one wants a similar experience but not as rough. Alternatively, if you're just off the game (happens for everyone I think), it'll still be the same old Doom when you get the urge to play again, and it's not like you have to be playing Doom at all times to enjoy the scene. If you're still feeling FPS, Mullet Mad Jack is fun, reasonably cheap, and shouldn't take long to beat. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Astar Posted June 9 Don't try to be a hero, eh... Life is short so just enjoy the games. Try playing Post Void. There are only 12 levels, the game can be completed in 15 minutes, but god, these 15 minutes will squeeze all the juice out of you. And you'll like it. It's very easy to get hooked on the Post Void needle 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Lila Feuer Posted June 9 Try playing more than one wad at a time, it's what I'm doing and it makes megawad journeys less arduous when you can bounce around. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
WASFDDDDD Posted June 9 What I usually do, is I save when I feel like something bad is about to happen, and then I don't load the save unless I make a fatal mistake That means no loading if I take 1 point of damage, no loading if I miss a few too many times, I only load the save if I die, or if I come out of the fight with no health and there are no medkits around or smth Recently though, I've been getting into the habit of just loading up Doom 2, starting from the beginning, and seeing how far I can get until I die. That's what I do when I wanna try out a new gameplay mod. If I don't fall into one of the death pits in Tricks and Traps, I can usually make it past Dead Simple before I run out of health and die to a shotgunner or smth (It's always the hitscanners, man!) 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
