jgs1989 Posted May 22 Hell Bound is one of my all time favorite wads. It truly feels like an epic adventure through elaborate techbases and then eventually to hell. The maps are detailed and each place creates a believable location with great atmosphere. Does anybody know of any wads that have at least a somewhat similar feel? I am also very open to Ultimate Doom megawads with this feel, although I am 99% certain I have played every one of those out there. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
chexwarrior Posted May 22 (edited) I also love Hellbound for the same reasons, IMO Doom 2 Reloaded has a similar vibe, give it a shot. EDIT: I should elaborate a bit more: Some of the levels in D2R aren't as good as others and the detail level is more similar to classic Doom 2 (but better I think). Also, if you really want to improve the mood of either megawad I suggest using the PSX Doom soundtrack! Edited May 22 by chexwarrior 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
LadyMistDragon Posted May 22 Lost Civilization is very similar in scale, although the emphasis is more on natural landscapes. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
galileo31dos01 Posted May 23 Uh, for "epic adventure through elaborate techbases and then eventually to hell" you could try out Relyctum. The maps in it are in general a lot more intricate and have plenty of nooks and crannies you don't want to miss. The feel you are looking for is definitely there. If you fancy single maps, check out Don't Turn Your Back on the City, it captures a similar feel to Hellbound while showcasing even more levels of environmental detail for an epic mini journey from the city to somewhere creepier. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Baron T. Mueriach Posted May 23 If you feel like spending 5 hours on each level because of the sheer size and complexity (and amazingly elaborate techbases) then definitely Ultimate Doom In Name Only. Never understood why this WAD got so much hate, I loved it. Also maybe Silence? I'm sure you've already played these though, it's hard to find the type of WAD you're describing. I wish there were more though. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
kalensar Posted May 23 I would have to put Mars War and Good Morning Phobos close to what you are meaning. I also love Hellbound at least for the first 20 maps. And also EDay Vanilla 2019, but it requires Zdoom, Zandronum, GZDoom or LZDoom. https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/megawads/marsw301 https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/megawads/gmp https://www.moddb.com/mods/brutal-doom/downloads/eday-vanilla-for-vanilla-and-mods 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Were you thinking of its predecessor D2INO? That's the one that got a mixed reception. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

I just remember a few people saying it was a "monstrosity" and that it didn't deserve a cacoward. But I certainly do remember D2INO getting a rash of negative feedback. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
LadyMistDragon Posted May 23 Oh right, I'm told Scorching Earth is Hellbound-esque but I've yet to personally verify it. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
chexwarrior Posted May 23 This one looks great, will definitely play it if/when it becomes compatible with dsda-doom. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Speaking of NeoDoom, since it was featured in the Doot Award, I went to try it out but its no longer compatible with modern ports. I wonder if theres anyway to fix it so the original intended experience can be played today? I know there's the vanillified version, but its unofficial 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Aubrey De Los Destinos Posted May 25 NeoDoom has one of my favourite maps of all time: a city of houses where you have to go door-to-door (as far as I remember it because it was years ago). 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Be sure you're loading it in on the right IWAD (UDINO is for Ultimate Doom, so run the Doom 1 IWAD) Also, use GZDoom. It's the most common one to use, and it's the latest release, ZDoom being the older, more outdated predecessor. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
