A 90's vibe Doom II map - one tough little cookie [cl-2]

Recommended Posts

A troll map. With an abusive number of monsters and a crappy music. I've nothing else to say because I freaking hate this kind of Sunder-esque map. :/

This is an awesome map. Emulating that 90's shovelware aesthetic is hard but this hits the nail on the head. The combat is pretty well thought out, too. I would love to see more of this kind of thing out there.

Saw this comment, and decided to try out the map for myself. Well, it's not a troll map, but yep, even on ITYTD this is insane slaughter stuff. But this is what most people like these days! This community is totally spoiled and ruined by all those megahard wads. This is not real Doom anymore. Nothing but crazy slaughter!

Least masochistic Hell Revealed enjoyer...

In all seriousness, this was a fun little romp. Archviles in wide open spaces make me sad.

Thank you all for the feedback!

I forgot to mention this map was so cursed, but so cursed that it made me accidentally trigger the all ghosts monsters glitch for the first time. I was innocently playtesting it to make sure it worked on cl-2 (because I had forgotten I was on cl-9 the whole time), when suddenly something seemed very off, and shortly after that I clipped through a wall and it all came to me: I was experiencing THE glitch for the first time.

I turned on the record button and I can share some footage of it when I get back from work!

While, at some level, I agree with Li'l devil and KevvyLava, it's strange that this critique is formulated for this map which is difficult but not that difficult.

I first tried it on HNTR and did it single segment then I tried UV : ok, more monsters, a cyber in the second room  but, since you can open the walls at your will, you can hide and rest... and you can also let the guy alive until you get better weapons (he may also help you by killing some baddies. The spidermastermind is no real threat because quckly infight and die, strangely (maybe because they didn't target me quick) the archviles guarding BFG felt less threatening than the revenants homing missiles in this messy fight from HNTR... arachnos are annoying and the big thing are the archviles in open air with the horde of barons (much more ammo killer than the HKs from HNTR).

The big imps corridor is mostly here to kill your ammo but the map, regarding ammo, is quite generous.

The chaingunners in the last room kill each others (and you can hide).

The last part with the cybies then archviles lowering, revenants and by bunch of archies guarding the exit is more difficult and I didn't beat it yet (there are souspheres and a secret mega armor)... but I've seen much more punishing stuff recently.

Not exactly my favorite kind of doom map (like Li'l devil and KevvyLava) but I liked it, it was, fun, yeah, fun...

I triggered it for the first time late game in Kama Sutra, might've been MAP21, was firing at a caco with the chaingun a ways away and think I went over 128 things or however it works and proceeded to break the game. Definitely the scariest thing that can ever happen in Doom!

This map's really nice to play through !! Ammo's a little tight but a bit of foreknowledge prevents that from being too much of a hindrance :^)

I understand what you're getting at, but it's a two-pronged critique.  1, I find the style predictable and uninteresting.  2, there's no payoff.  The fights aren't memorable because they are repetitive.  Putting in wave after wave of enemies is definitely an established style I've seen on the site.  This was clearly the intent of the author, so of course I respect that.  I don't want to be too negative because I did play through the map and even though I had to respawn a few times, I do agree with you that the difficulty wasn't crazy (which is appreciated).  I felt that if I was going to criticize the author's work, I should at least give him the courtesy of playing through the level.

Had a go at this map. It's rough around the edges for sure, but it also demonstrates a surprising understanding of Doom's fundamentals and made what I would say is effective use of various monsters in a few specific and engaging circumstances. I'm saying this with the presumption that your girlfriend has a more nascent experience with Doom in general, although if that's not the case then it may come across as a bit patronizing which I don't intend at all.

The highlight for me was the trap at the very end and figuring out how to manage the AV group, but I also liked dealing with the caco horde and trying to get into the room with the BFG. Fun stuff!

Here's a vid of my playthrough:

Had a go, got it blind on UV.. it took 20 minutes because I was more determined do it without dying than doing it fast hahaha. It's obviously a little rough, but it's a first map so that can be forgiven, and it was quite fun in its innocence. I unironically enjoyed this more than the majority of Hell Revealed. The third fight had some mean Archvile placement, that's for sure.

There's a couple of people here with sticks up their asses, ignore them. Combat and ammo're fine given the circumstances... if all else fails, there's buckets of chaingun ammo!

I normally nope out straight away at a monster count of that size, but I got curious. I got to 480 (out of 500 + 45 at death) kills on UV with a lot of that being down to infighting, before getting pipped by a Chaingunner because I already grabbed all the health I could see. It didn't feel overly choreographed which I did like, just gives you a load of monsters and its down to prioritising enemies, using infighting and movement to keep going. Good MIDI too, fun sassy brass version of "Searching!".

Not normally my type of map, but I enjoyed the time I spent on it.  I almost wish I got the all-ghosts bug too!

Fun, Brutal, Challenging and Awesome Map, I really do like Slaughter Map's.

Ammo wasn't that hard to manage, health was a little hard to manage but its fine.

The Map started out with 500 Monsters, and in the end because of all the Archvile's it jumped to 736.

The Plasma Gun and BFG9000 are your best friend in this Map, everytime I got cell ammo, it put a smile on my face!

Great Map! Beat it on UV!

Got 100% kills without the BFG for an extra challenge. I love abstract maps. Definitely fits the 90s vibe mentioned. Not using the BFG was largely fine until the end when I had to grind through 10 Archies with a chaingun, lol!

Edit: Apparently I did not find the Plasma Gun.

Ohh, that's a cool idea for a challenge! I thought about trying it with fast monsters to spice it up even more. I honestly think this is a good map for speedrunning challenges, or weapon restrictions like that, or fast monsters even.

Cool map! I especially liked how the chaingunners and Arch-viles were used! The former, almost like kind of a trick until the bit seemingly inspired by Dimensions map 01 starts.

Is this "insanely hard troll slaughter map" in the room with us right now? Map is loads of fun, and pretty tame as far as slaughter goes. Love the clunky old school vibes mixed with some fun combat and loads of in-fighting opportunities. Here's a messy uv-max, not my first attempt, but I durdled around finding secrets, and I did not know about the arch-vile trap at the end. Not quite sure how I survived it: wwwy-ryiron-uvmax.zip

Gave you a megasphere for saying exactly what I've been thinking for years: This is not real Doom anymore.
