since our supernatural spore-sprout friend has mentioned myspace this's been bothering me like mad!!!

anybody remember some metallica cover band from the myspace days that ONLY did saint anger covers?? it was definitely an over the top, piss-take sorta take on it. some would call it Ironic if they come from/have distant influence from a particular english speaking wakaba image board that will remain unnamed.

i never really listened to saint anger other than to induce a particular joyous emotion, one of the furthest from anger one could be. maybe revisit it once every handful of years as metallica ain't something i'm always itching to listen to (this is one of the angry guitar music alltimers imo, pure michigan baby!). but, every once in a while i the title track come to the forefront of my mind, but the ethereal brain-sound of it for me is not recalled as what the band metallica had recorded. the goofy myspace saint anger cover band is what comes to mind. it sounded spot on, but definitely not 100% the same - the difference between the two was roughly akin to the difference between the steamhammer and metal blade mixes of sodom's obsessed by cruelty, despite being having zero members in common with metallica. if i remember correctly, the cover band's profile pic on myspace might have been a rather vulgar and juvenile mspaint edit of the original's art. this is a completely earnest post, as every single darn time that song returns to my brain, it comes in the form of that stupid, honestly just a teeny bit mean-spirited take tribute to the sound of that album. does this belong in one of those "lost media" threads?

to speak without disparagement towards saint anger: the snare is genuinely my favorite part of it. the hollow and clunky way to set up a typical snare drum, often compared with a mean spirit to that of a "trash can", can be done with astounding results. in the case of saint anger, it is way too gosh darn high in the mix. the way that snare is mixed is empirical evidence for the benefits of using hearing protection. hearing protection is very important when you're subjecting them all sorts of audio undergoing intense powered amplification or loud acoustics on an even semi-regular basis.

very much same here, St. Anger carried me through some Very Dark moments as both an angry depressed teenager and an angry depressed adult. honestly it's not even a guilty pleasure for me because i don't feel guilty about enjoying it. it's definitely a "listen only when i'm absolutely down" kind of thing for me though.

 

also i enjoy both the st. anger snare and dave mustaine's vocals, what does that say about me

I actually liked the album when it came about, then again I was like 13 and at peak Metallica obsession, and it was new Metallica. As I got into more metal it definitely got relegated and the internet memed it into oblivion. I decided it sucked for many years, but last year I gave it another shot and found I've come to appreciate it a bit more again as I've gotten older.

 

Then again the album that many people (me included) still think is their best, Justice, also has pretty bizarre sound....but "bad" production has never stopped me enjoying an album. One of my favourite death metal albums is Breeding the Spawn, and half the tracks on that the guitars sound like they were recorded through a computer microphone. It doesn't matter because the songwriting is top shelf.

This thread got me to listen to the opening track from St Anger for the first time and while I kinda laughed at the snare tone I was more stunned by the way they sidechained it to the kick so it just cuts out very abruptly in a bunch of places. I had to double check that I was hearing an official upload on Youtube and not some fan mix. Also the lyrics and songwriting are hilariously terrible. FRAN TICK TICK TICK TOCK KEEP ON SEARRCHINNNN. Sorry Grungo, this is just embarrassing.

My biggest problem with St. Anger is the same problem I have with almost all their albums: Metallica can't write a song shorter than five minutes to save their lives. I honestly enjoy all Metallica albums (except for Reload, after Fuel it's fucking worthless frankly), but you can cut out at least two songs off of each one and trim down most by like 25% and doing so would make the experience of listening to one much more tolerable. Probably explains why Ride the Lightning is my favorite of theirs: it's the shortest one and the two "long" songs (Creeping Death and Call of Ktulu) are deservedly so. This cover of the whole album fixes this by cutting down on some of the longer songs and has a much more tolerable snare sound which, in my opinion, makes this is the definitive way to listen to the album. It's all very faithful while still having the best of St. Anger (plus the vocals are uncannily similar sounding to James Hetfield which, if they weren't, would be a pretty big pet peeve of mine). Then again though, I also love Risk, Super Collider, Load, and pretty much all "bad albums" of bands I like so maybe I'm talking out my ass here.

We (my wife and I) got St Anger when it came out. Pretty sure we didn't get to the end of it. It's un-listenable. Just re-listened to title track. uuuugghhh!!. Sorry, but yes I think it IS as bad as its reputation. There's no comparison with - for example - Ride The Lightning or the black album.

Funny enough my first album was Black Album but then i kinda went backwards in there albums.

 

I still say ...And Justice for all is still my favorite, right next to Master of puppets and ride the lighting.

 

Trust me St. Anger is so goddamn bad, i rather listen to 72 seasons or Avenged Sevenfold's Life is but a dream (LBAD) and those two albums are cringe.

I've never gotten that into Metallica, but it's always interesting to listen to people debate whether a selection of music is "good" or "bad". The descriptions of the snare drum are hilarious, but I'm glad that some people like the album regardless.

For me the good Metallica is those free and three album with a preference of Master of Puppets, i stop from Load because of a direction more Rock. So i never listen St.Anger.

It's Like Sepultura, i enjoy their first albums, from Roots, it becomes like if they have lost all their skills.

S&M is the only Metallica album I even enjoy listening to once in a while, the orchestra helps to make the music less bland... which is my main problem with the band - their tone, atmosphere, and lyrics just sound so uninspired to me. St. Anger actually doesn't fit that description. Instead, the tone is painful, the atmosphere resembles that of having a bad hangover in a trailer park, and the lyrics are memorable for the worst reasons. Although lines such as "KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL" probably come across differently if you're a cavebro.

The whole album from the mastering to the singing just sounds wrong. It is just like someone's high school band project that they recorded songs for in their garage. But no, this is Metallica.

I never knew it was common to hate on S&M. I liked it a lot along with Load, Reload and 'black album' when I was a teen

 

Ive never actually heard the St. Anger album, largely because the last time I listened to them on spotify I went for the new albums and hated all of them, then fell back to the comfort zone while the free trial was still up.

Nah, they were like a lot of metal bands in their early days in how they generally avoided stretching things out too much. But AJFA, one of their best regarded entries even...has a fair few songs that all go one too long. And the less said about Death Magnetic, the better ("All Nightmare Long" was certainly an appropriate title :P). I know there's some connection to the classically-inspired background of Cliff Burton, but plenty of other metal acts in their later period like Ozzy Osbourne and Alice on Chains made songs probably around twice the length of their effectiveness.

 

The former especially is a shame because Ozzmosis is otherwise the last actually good Ozzy album, before the subsequent career became mired in boring outsider songwriting garbage that was so lacking with Bob Daisley's absence, it hurts.
