GAYhem 2024 - The (Gender)Queer Doomer's Community Project! (Recruiting)

Recommended Posts

Wow, that was fast… I have a few questions.

1. How exactly should we go about making our maps queer themed other than excessive rainbow usage? Some clarification on the theme in the rules would be nice..

2. 32 maps seems a bit lofty for a month deadline, I think this would be better as a shorter mapset anyways..

3. Are only queer mappers going to be allowed to participate? I’d like some clarification on that also.

Hmm, I’ll take Map02 though.

1. It doesn't have to be "rainbows everywhere" or whatever, the wad is supposed to function as some kind of "Japanese Community Project" for the Queer community.

2. I'll extend the deadline to August 1st if we're running out of time and the project isn't completed by then.

3. I've mentioned in the bottom of the spoiler that allies are welcome to participate.

Glad to see you aboard! Thank you for participating in the Project!

How the hell did you made this so fast, lmao.

I will sound like xaser here, but i think this is the kind of project that would benefit of not reserving slots and just leaving people to make a map, and then organize them based on difficulty.

Anyways, i want to make a map for this! Any slot for episode 2 or 3 is fine by me

^ This ^

I would highly recommend no mapslots.

It's probably better if I did go with not reserving slots, I'll go ahead and change it to just be a "go ahead and map for this" type of thing.

Another thing i recommend, @Baron T. Mueriach is kinda right, it's better to aim at a mapset with whatever number of maps we have until the month ends than a full blown megawad, kind of like the PUSS projects. It's more easy and it fits better to celebrate this month

It would actually be kinda sick tho to see some maps using the colors from genderfluid, bisexual and asexual flags.

Spoiler

But really I just like purple.

I would join but I prefer mapping in UDMF, and the idea I have requires some colored light features anyways

I'll share what I thought of with you though: I'm thinking a sort of dark, techy map with a notable retrowave bent. (So basically, think the Lust layer from Ultrakill, that's literally what it is) Its gimmick is that it has purple, magenta and dark blue strobe lights everywhere making it difficult to see anything. First weapon you get is an SSG, before you've encountered any enemies. Lots of shotgunners, prominent heart shapes, and maybe a cyberdemon in the finale

Yeah that's basically it, it's a giant reference to Ultrakill XD

You think calling it "Bisexual Light!" would be too on-the-nose? Maybe something subtler if not any less flamboyant would be better?

Yeah, that would be really cool, and adding a color palette would help with that (i think, i don't know a lot about color palettes)

I don't want to be the bad guy or anything, but I have a gut feeling this is going to end up the same way another project did in the past:

I hope that doesn't happen and by all means go for it, but LGBTQ+ is a very polarizing subject no matter what.

This is lovely! Even better as a vanilla-compatible project! s2

I'm discovering myself as a non-binary lately. Unfortunaly I'm too busy to enter on a community project right now (but I wish the best of luck on this)

In case someone stumbling across this thread is genuinely wondering what a non-rainbow-y LGBTQ+ tribute map might look like, check out Eviternity MAP26.

one question I do have is can we add custom textures to our maps?

OTEX should supply you with the textures you need, but what textures do you have in mind?

Use the Boom: Doom 2 format.

if you're unsure if your map is able to run in vanilla, use the CRL source port as it notifies you when your map would crash.

I think there's some kind of disynchronization in the conditions. The map for Boom != Vanilla. Either that or I've misunderstood something.

Oh, my bad, I changed the map format from vanilla to boom, thank you for noticing that!

For some reason i have a inkling the Ancient Aliens palette is going to work wonders with this, if not slightly modified.

You're totally right, I should probably include a resource wad with a custom palette and some pride-flag themed textures along with the OTEX textures!

Neat project despite the jackass in the comments here. Can we use the 32in24 texture set as well? I much prefer it’s use included with OTEX as OTEX is extremely weak by itself.

Of course! I'm working on some custom resources for the wad, so I'll have to put it in the same texture set as the OTEX textures. Could you link to the texture set by the way? I'm only finding the megawad named 32in24.

A custom palette with some extra textures (even just a bunch of single-colour walls and flats) would probably get a lot of mileage here. That said the ancient aliens palette, specifically, isn't compatible with normal Doom resources, since it significantly remaps some of the colour ranges, and combining it with OTEX textures would be a lot of extra work.

32in24-15 also uses a custom palette, though one that is much closer to the Doom palette. (It's based on cc4-tex which didn't have its own palette.) I imagine it will play nicely with OTEX, but you can only pick one palette per wad, so you might want to decide on that before anything.

Anyhow as an ally I am probably not going to map for this, but I will offer playtesting and map tech support to anyone who contributes a map. I usually record first-impression demos in dsda-doom instead of youtube playthroughs, though I can look into uploading them to yt as well for the less technically-inclined mappers.

I'll look into making a "Best of both world palette" that allows for common Pride-themed colors, while also remaining Doom-compatible. Thank you for your input!

32in24 and OTEX mix insanely well together from making my own maps with both. Honestly I can’t even imagine using OTEX without it.

Anyway count me throwing my hat in the ring here. Just sticking with OTEX for now. Maybe I'll actually finish this one.
