NenapoMinayuChtchiyasya Posted June 1 My first map. There is no special plot here. Probably as Romero himself bequeathed, I am just not experienced enough to somehow reveal the plot in the gameplay. I didn't bother much with the name, in fact, you can put any name here, even blooming hellish gardens, since there is no hint of a plot. How do you give your maps names? What does it depend on? Well, here it is, my first public map, I have no experience at all in creating maps (I read some Doomworld guides and watched YouTube videos to get a rough idea), so judge as strictly as you think necessary. Probably the hardest part for me was creating screenshots 😅. lol idk Some screenshots: * Map info * Total levels: 1 Music: No music in level (I just damage d_running.mus by Notepad++ to turn it off😅. I don't know how to turn off the music in the map completely.) Dehacked/BEX Patch: I don't know what it is Files required: DOOM2.wad * Play Information * Game : DOOM II (it looks like DOOM, but I was making in DOOM2.wad base) Map #: MAP01 Single Player : Aha Difficulty Settings: Easy/medium Skill and Hard Skill are different Editor used: Slade 3 v3.2.5 Build Time: IDK, month maybe Format: Boom Tested With: GZDOOM (g4.6.0) and PrBOOM+ (I don't know how to run DSDA, so I haven't tested it on that)* Download *Dropbox 14 Quote Share this post Link to post
soMeDude86 Posted June 1 wow! that was a lot of shotgunners. i really like the level design tho. there's a lot of nice details! good work 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
LadyMistDragon Posted June 1 Pretty good for your first map! Maybe the browness gets stretched out a bit, but texture usage is still nice and tasteful with a desire to catch a sense of place and combat overall isn't too bad. Other than the hitscanner spammage toward the end, which gets a little bit annoying, especially if there's no secret weapons or anything like that. Chaingunners get rather tiresome when they're carelessly teleported in every direction. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Zahid Posted June 1 its a very good first map simple but effective design as i really enjoy the window link to different areas so enemy can attack you from far rooms also like sniper monsters and lots of hitscanners keep player on toes but map gets excessively easy as all of the sudden megashpere appears n without as secret it is unnecessary imo secondly more snipers like manc or anarc can be placed in outdoor area and considering there is no ssg and its a tight space map pinkies can be used as i missed bit monster variation here and my last major issue was that although you put many radiation suits and make many lava encounters compulsory, lava was not hurting the player at all and was behaving like normal floor it didnt make any sense to me or maybe its a bug for me as i mentioned earlier its very very good for first attempt here is my fda able to max it after 1 death prboom cl2 uv skill used popi9.zip 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Degree23 Posted June 1 An enjoyable first map overall! A few comments: - There was a lot of repetition with the ambushes. - Considering there isn't a Green Armor in the level (that I saw), the fact you get a MegaArmor and then a MegaSphere later on in the normal course of the level feels a little out of place. The MegaArmor could be replaced with a Green Armor, and the MegaSphere moved to a secret. - The repetition wasn't aided by the lack of SSG because it made the encounters more tedious. With the amount of HKs in the level, the flow would really benefit from having an SSG at least part way through the map. - The green damaging floors (which I believe are why you put Radiation Suits in the level?) don't actually appear to be damaging. But overall not a bad first map! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
NenapoMinayuChtchiyasya Posted June 3 Thank you very much for the valuable advice. Actually, I left the rocket launcher as a secret weapon, just because you didn't find it doesn't mean there is no secret weapon. I have some doubts and questions: - is it really necessary to have an SSG on the map? Is the rocket launcher not enough? - are pinkies expected mainly in narrow places? I never thought about it. - probably because I was making it based on DOOM 2, but that doesn't mean that monster diversity is necessary, does it? - what if I want to remake the map? better to make a new post or update the existing one, even if the map changes so much that the first comments will be inappropriate, what do you think? Now I just fixed some bugs for this version. But in the new one, I significantly expanded the map, removed some sectors, and changed the map walkthrough itself. Sorry for my English, it's just my fourth language if I say something wrong. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Oxyde Posted June 3 Quote is it really necessary to have an SSG on the map? Is the rocket launcher not enough? There is no rule in any book that says there must be a Super Shotgun somewhere in your level! However, if your level (like this one) is mostly in cramped areas and twisty hallways, then a Rocket Launcher will be a risky weapon to use. The Super Shotgun will turn out to be a better alternative in this setting. As far this level goes, even the Chaingun is enough. Quote are pinkies expected mainly in narrow places? I never thought about it. Because of their size and because and because they only have a melee attack, that's where they work best. If you want to attempt to use Demons in outer areas, you could basically put a horde and have it act as a moving wall with HP that will ultimately corner you if you don't destroy it quick enough. Be creative! Quote probably because I was making it based on DOOM 2, but that doesn't mean that monster diversity is necessary, does it? E2M8 has two different monster types. E3M8 has three different monster types. All of Episode 1 has only 5 monsters types for 8 levels straight. Don't overthink about variety, rather try to focus on what each monster type has to offer that the others don't and how you can make encounters engaging. Hitscanners are basically drone turrets, and so are Arachnotrons. Mancubis are deadly in small spaces and infinitely valuable infight partners. Pain Elementals are a priority target that can cause havoc really quick. Go wild with these! Quote what if I want to remake the map? better to make a new post or update the existing one, even if the map changes so much that the first comments will be inappropriate, what do you think? You can remake it if you'd like, but I'd suggest you try something new instead so that you burn yourself out! Mapping is primarily something you do for yourself, not for others! That being said, here's my FDA! I enjoyed this level and I had a few extremely close calls. Music would not play for some reason so I added music in post. Very cool level! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Can I ask a couple more of my silly questions? 🥹 👉👈 - What does FDA stand for? I only know the Food and Drug Administration 😅 - I understand that few people read the description of the map, since I wrote that I deliberately broke the music file because I did not know how to turn it off 😅 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Oxyde Posted June 3 FDA is short for "First Demo Attempt"! My bad for not reading, alternatively, did you try leaving the "music" field blank? This may work! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I like starting with a name or a concept - then build the map from that. And using puns. You can look at a list of Doom and Doom2 maps and megawad map lists to get an idea of how names are chosen. As for your map - pretty cool. I think monster variety and placement was good, and the rooms are interesting enough that they're easily recognizable and don't get boring. I don't mind the lack of SSG, it's not a fact that you need it for this one and it's a valid design choice. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

NenapoMinayuChtchiyasya Posted June 4 (edited) There are four options for liking here in Doomworld. Is there a difference between them? I hope I clicked the right one, I'm a little confused by this strange reaction selection 😅 Edited June 4 by NenapoMinayuChtchiyasya 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
xScavengerWolfx Posted June 4 A "babies first wad" thread i see. I will have to check this out when i can. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I don't think there's any official standard on those, just use them however you feel is right. I use them like this: Soulspheres are essentialy regular likes Megaspheres are strong likes Invulnerability is for legendary posts And invisibility is for taboo, hot takes, or just generally cheeky comments that I find amusing. 👻 The logic is that I'm handing that powerup to the poster as if it was in-game, more or less. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
NenapoMinayuChtchiyasya Posted June 4 Thanks @VICE! (I figured out how to insert mentions) I couldn’t resist and made a small meme that I came across by chance but it was on a slightly different topic 😂 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
