DOOM 1 map - Astral Anomaly

Hey there,

 

I figured it was about time I gave Doom 1 some love. So this.

 

No baron/cyber slaughter. Health/ammo is very scarce in UV in the beginning (although there's a free berserk pack - use it wisely!). I kinda wanted to highlight the SMM making it threatening, without making it annoying. Map is packed with secrets, but is beatable without them. Aimed for a shorter "main path" length of map, so I made extra optional sections for otherwise lengthy gameplay enjoyers and secret hunters!

 

  • doom.wad;
  • all difficulties implemented;
  • no jumping/crouching;
  • tested in GZDoom and DSDA-Doom.

 

I felt a bit limited regarding hellish and wooden textures - I missed some of the Doom II ones! But that's okay. Gameplay-wise I didn't feel like the map was missing Doom II monsters - imo at least.

I'm not sure. But it works in DSDA if you use Doom v1.9 and Ultimate Doom compatibility.

I don't like many object blocking the way in this sector.

Very nicely detailed, the gameplay and decoration feels like something out of DOOM64.

The red key ambush seems a bit too cramped especially if you don't have cells left, and the lost souls in the map bog down the pace just a little bit.

 

With those two gripes aside, it's a very well made map, had a good time whilst playing.

Good architecture, good gameplay, good monster placement what can I say? The difficulty was challenging for me while I played through this, but the Red Key trap was a little too harsh, putting 4 barons in a small room is not fun for anyone, but overall good map!

Great stuff! Maybe I could have searched for secrets to make the end a little bit less grindy but things here mostly work out. I think I missed part of the red key situation but I'm used to less multi-phased stuff.
