I just play the maps that are already made for me :) Give it a shot. You don't have to share them if you don't like, but you might enjoy it. It's surprisingly easy. Half of it is just drawing shapes. The program measures stuff for you, you can easily draw a rectangle or circle with the press of a button, or use the stair builder to easily come up with more complex geometry. I've currently got 11 released maps under my belt, so I'm still a newbie, but I have another 8 finished maps on my hard drive that belong to various solo projects I'm working on and about half a million half finished maps and random ideas sitting on my hard drive. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
VICE Posted June 7 I only started mapping recently with UDB. Tried mapping in GZDoomBuilder some years ago but I couldn't get it to work on my computer at the time, so I mostly stuck to gameplay modding instead. Recently made a couple of small square sections for community projects so far, and am now working on finalizing my first complete map for another community project. After that I have another map in the works for a fourth community project, and a few ideas to release a gimmicky mini-episode of my own after that. I happen to know how to use CAD software from work and college, and have played a lot of maps over the years, so the learning curve for me was mostly just watching a bunch of video tutorials and diving right in. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
DNSKILL5 Posted June 7 A long time ago but it never was released. I’ve made a lot of Wolfenstein 3d maps and released a Duke 3d map a while back, so it’s always possible I’ll release something eventually. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
OnionTaco22 Posted June 7 (edited) I have made some maps, and I am currently making my first 32 map wad (in in general just my first proper map set). I enjoy it because I usually like to create custom stuff for games, as it lets me make things that I want or think are cool. ptrdoom Posted June 7 6 hours ago, GreenAnime said: worst part about mapping is you have no idea how to start DoomGappy has made an excellent tutorial for beginners, you can start from there if you're up for it. That's how I started and ended up knowing how to make lifts, doors and secrets etc, basic things. I think it's worth it to give it a try. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Sneezy McGlassFace Posted June 7 I think that anybody can make a map, and I'd encourage everyone to give it a try. But don't feel like you have to. It's not a requirement or an expectation. We're all here because we enjoy doom. Whether we play or make maps or music or textures or work on the engine or whatever else. If you wanna contribute, playing and giving feedback is great way to do so. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
kalensar Posted June 7 Nope! The most mapping I have done is fixing problems and editing them for projects. Never built a map from scratch, and probably never will as it is not my reason for starting doom modding. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Borg Posted June 7 18 hours ago, PeterMoro said: The problem with making a Doom map is that, once you get through your first map, you want to make a better one...and then a better one...and then a better one..until one day you wake up and realise "I'm a mappaholic" LOL Been there. Making each new map better and better and then deciding that all the previous maps are crap. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Kyle07 Posted June 7 I played around with doom builder 2 in 2016, around the time when doom 2016 came out. Tried to do an DOOM 1 vanilla map with hellish theme. But the map was chaotic and not a real doom map. Don't know if I should pickup that map and finish it somehow. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
ZeroTheEro Posted June 8 I started making one during the pandemic but after posting a couple of screenshots I got busy with work again and I forgot about it now I had the idea again, with the theme and the music set already set in my head, but only time would tell if I'd start doing it again. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
