Item lag in GZdoom

Recommended Posts

For whatever reason, whenever I play certain mods that add monsters dropping items on death, I find that GZdoom lags like hell if there are a lot of them. This became readily apparent when I played that ratchet and clank inspired mod which adds bolt drops, which tend to appear in very large quantities, especially in slaughter wads. It also became apparent when I was using Gun Bonsai and got the ammo dropping perk up to level 5, which predictably slowed the game down to a crawl after killing maybe 50 monsters in one level without picking anything up.

Is there any way to reduce this type of lag? Because I know monster lag can't really be fixed besides just getting a better computer, but I wonder if there's some kind of graphical setting I can change to make this go away. Because I really like that R&C mod but it's totally unplayable with this issue.

The most obvious question and guess is do these mods attach lights to their pickups, and if so, have you tried disabling lights?

Well, I know that Gun Bonsai doesn't attach lights to its ammo pickups,  but they're still causing lag. But I'm not sure if the R&C mod does or not. How do I disable lights just to be sure?

Settings-- Display-- Dynamic Lights.

Another tactic is Change your Video API to either OpenGl ES or use VUlkan IF your PC is friendly to it. OpenGL mode can be very hardware intensive Depending on how big of a beast your PC is. If you are on a Tomato/Potato like me then OpenGL ES can solve a lot hardware performance issues at the cost that PBR and Parallax shaders cannot work.
