Would AI upscaling old chunky "Model Rip" sprites be an advantage of creating cleaner sprites?

Question

Posted (edited)

For the early gameplay mods released in the 2000s, like Aeons of Death and the AlandoGuns, many weapon sprites were "Model Rips" with pixelation added to convert them into sprites. Many gameplay mods also used monster sprites with the same "Model Rip" chunkyness to them.

With the advent of AI image upscaling technology, I wonder if it's possible to use said software to remove the pixelation and make more clearer weapon and monster sprites, especially for making better 2.5D remake sprites of the Quake games, Heretic & Hexen 2, Doom 3, Doom 2016 and Eternal, and probably other 3D-modeled FPS games as well.

So for a start you are talking about two completely different things. The clay models used to create the base of Doom's sprites are in no possible way comparative to the 3d models in other games like Doom 3, that's just not how that works in any imaginable prospect.

Further, Doom didn't only use clay models but also an assortment of props to create the shapes and textures of the sprites themselves. They were then pixel painted over to varying degrees of either finer details or complete constructions. The Pinkie Demon for example was drawn over a completely different looking toy, used only for its basic shape.

Finally, no. In no way will AI be able to improve any of it because it doesn't understand what the images are and has no comprehension of their intent. They are not able to create, only regurgitate similar data.

Uh actually, the player weapon sprites hands were that of Kevin Cloud's, and maybe resizing the AI upscaled sprite back to whatever the original resolution size was wouldn't make much difference either.

Last I checked the weapon sprites aren't just a series of arms. They are all a mix of various photos, highly modified (sans the shotgun and chainsaw, though the former was from a straight up toy). The key word is highly modified, the BFG barely even resembles what it originally was. An AI upscale would have literally no frame of reference, even if it wasn't shit.
